hey so as i said in one of my threads i had a bluey die after the flooding late last night. needless to say i performed the post mortem tonight, annoyed me a bit because this bluey was from my breeding project and as you will see was at the beginning of 'gravidity'. also a friend found a eastern water dragon that had been washed down the river, it was listless and went downhill when i got there it ahd just died so i did a post mortem on that one as well. enjoy the pics,

firstly the blue tongue

really sucked about this girl. unfortunatly not a whole lot showed up but atleast it didnt have worms so that is a good thing.

and the water dragon took a few more pics of this one. also a female and also ovulating

found within the stomach. overly not a large burden but these round worms can grow to a significant size.

Very interesting indeed, thanks for sharing! :D

I loved disecting things biology.

Sorry to hear about your bluey.

Thanks for sharing Helikaon - sorry about the bluey :(
Very interesting indeed - lizard is the only thing I haven't dissected.

Geez, those worms look nasty.
Did you check the skinks lungs for fluid (water) that
may of drowned it, or is that something not easily
checked for?

Either way, interesting photos your not too shabby
with a scalpel either by the looks of it Helikaon.

Matt.

Wow Gary.. its the first time ive seen the innards of lizards..
n you've got good 'vet potential' ..!!

Very interesting! I never knew how big worms are. Its amazing :)

Very sorry about your bluie :(

thanks matt, ive done post mortems on just abut every species i can think of my lectures always said i was a clean worker. and yes i did check for fluid the lungs of the water dragon were clean so no deffinite cause of death for that one, but it also had a few other signs, including the bleedign from the mouth and subcutaneous air pockets. in the blue tongue i did find a white throth in the upper trachea, and posterior lungs. it obviously aspirated water and it became throthy during the period it ws breathing afterwards which was many hrs, the other 2 that were sickly seem tobe doing fine. but i'll touch wood just in case. you would think when it ws flooding they would have got on a log just hidden under it under the water. silly creatures.

and thanks everyone

cheers
Gary

nice PM, sorry to hear about yr bluey, hopefully some of your others will end up "gravid" this season tho.

Anything in the upper GI region? on the bluey or just looking a bit different post PM? nice shots of the worms, now just need them in some 10% formalin for a parisitology collection when you end up needing one.

yeah mate the digestive system was fine, and yeah i was thinking about keeping the worms they are in the freezer at the moment,. but yeah i should grab some formalin from work.

Very clean dissection! Noticed your a vet technologist...whats that?

a vet tech is firstly someone who has completed a bachelor of applied science specialising in veterinary technology. a relatively new degree. we are trained in many areas, so basically, we monitor anaesthetics, perform and develop xrays, take bloods and test them. we do treatments eg, injections, catheterisations, fluid therapy and the likes. we assist the vet in any way they need, we perform dentals, and we also do reception and cleaning. it is very similar to a cert 4 nurse we do get taught a lot of theory due to it being a tertiary course. i enjoyed the course a lot.

ps. luke if you have anythign more to add feel free.

Great dissection, nice and clean.
Ive only performed post postmortems on two species of reptile.
Olive pythons and Coastal carpets. Plus the usual rats etc in school.
Would you say that reptiles are easier to perform on?

Good stuff, well not really but you know what I mean
I couldn't do that to one of my reptiles, I get too attached lol.

ah, I bet if I cut open my eastern beardies they would have more worms then that :) yer, my mate did a post mortem type thing on a golden crowned and it had a skink in its belly. I have only dont it to wild mice though as we used to go out and catch and kill heaps of them (we have chooks and a major mouse problem around there pen)

nope harder, but only really because of their skin. but i think its because you do so many cats and dogs that you exactly whats normal and whats wrong, yet with reptiles you are usually only doing them because the reptiles been sick.

I am sorry about your loss. But in saying that the knowledge which I have gained from your dissection has been brilliant. Thank you very much for sharing your pics.

All the best.

M.

Yes, I agree totally with the post above^. Very informative, but shame about the loss. Thanks for sharing.
