Whats involed in getting a specialist permit.
Do you have to be a member of a herp group.

no u dont have to be a member of a herp group, it costs around 90 dollars a year i think? there are a few specialist permit holders on here that are in s.a that will advise you on how to get it and what els is involved
good luck and welcome to aps

by the way here is a phone number that u can call to organise it and if no one gives u the info on it u can ask these people because they are incharge of it all and will be the best people to explain it properly to you

.... 65 for 5years?!? lol wow we really are getting ripped off here in s.a lol! maby its because there isnt as many herp keepers here who knows

As far as i am aware you need to submit your application along with at least 2 references from keepers that currently hold a specialist permit.

You may also be required to show photo evidence of how you keep your current reptiles.

And tell them what you are considering getting, probably best to give them a buzz.

Are references vital. Cause i dont know anybody that has one from were i am.

if u call them and ask them u will find out more because u will have to explain ur situation to them about not knowing other keepers etc, im sure not everyone with a specialist permit would have references because not everyone has friends that keep reps aswel

im unsure tho thats why u should cal them

In my opinion, the references are only as vital as how rare/ difficult the intended species are to keep.

Dependent on your track record with your basic and the species you have kept, the FPU may be a little more lenient (not promising anything). Use basic knowledge, if you have kept pythons and thats all for around 5 years, no way will you be endorsed for a crocodile etc.....

Specialist permits (class 3) are endorsement permits, not listed permits so written expression from you and why you want the class 3 schedule animals must be provided everytime you want a species to be added to your permit. In my experience they tend to add reptile genera to your kepping list rather than every single species etc (not just a particular velvet gecko but the Oedura genus, just as an example).

Give them a ring and make sure you cover all basis of what you want to know so you don't make any mistakes etc.

Good luck.
