so, go to get some new bulbs for my tanks tonight and they have none, I ask.. where are the standard bulbs?

Oh' government policy, we can't sell them any more.. so I ask, what do reptile keepers do? we use bulbs for heating? and get blank stares in response..

I am so outrageously annoyed right now/

so off to bunnings tomorrow and hope they have stock left and buy every single friken bulb they have..

stupid government,. you never consider all the angles do you? jerks..

You might want to go to Pet Stock at Capalaba, they are having a 20% of URS brand items as they are going over to Reptile One and there are quite a few incandecant bulbs in amongst it.
Banjo.

get with the times.

use down lights... sure the globe is $10, but it last longer, gives off more heat with less energy,

I think I'll just say bugger it and give the whole game in actually, just sell all my animals off and save myself a bundle all over :D only have three adults and some youngens, shouldn't be too hard to offload a few carpet pythons me hopes..

If you are going to give up keeping reptiles just because you have to change to a new type of light bulb - then you must not be that passionate about reptiles.
We have slowly been changing ours over and have had no probs at all.
We still use heat cord/rocks for our main heat source..

Can they still sell halogen lights? I noticed they wernt at woolies.

ok so are they the ones sold at petshops you know the red and blue ones

Thats some dedication right there!! LOL

Im a bit confused of what is actually being phased out? What type of bulbs? Is it the heat globes ( 75w, 100w night glow, infared etc)?

For around the last 6 months or so it has been illegal for incandecent bulbs to be imported. What is for sale at the moment are existing stocks in shops/warehouses etc.Traders are allowed to sell this stock until the end of the year, after that it will be illegal for them to be sold.

ive been using dimmed down 150 watt flood lights for a few months now in most of my enclosures, not sure if they are getting axed too?, but they seem to last alot longer than the cheap spotties. im looking to convert all over to ceremic heat emmiters in combination with low wattage halogens, probabaly cheaper and more efficient in the long run,

I've been stocking up over the last several months. I think I've bought out the entire stock in Alice Springs ;) Should be enough for several years.

LOL incandescent globes use something like 80% of their energy giving off heat rather than light. They are massively inefficient as a light source and waste loads of energy every year.

Do you really think when the Dept of Climate Change looks at ways to reduce energy consumption for the 20 million Australian citizens that they stop and think "hang on, there are a few thousand snake owners scattered throughout Australia, let's hold back on this ban which will reduce wasted energy by X amount per year just in case herp owners' options of ceramic bulbs, heat mats, heat cords and heat panels aren't adequate"

they may be an ineffective way of lighting, but they produce the nicest quality of light. fluro/energy savers are such an ugly way lo light a room, led isn't MUCH better... yet. bathrooms and the laundry are the only place for fluro in my place.
imagine a candelarbra with energy saver light globes on it... no thanks. AND they don't dim unless you ballast them. My sister has put energy savers through her house. It looks junk, she also offset it with a 2000w outdoor heater. HMmmm... 60w light globes are banned, but outdoor heating is on the rise. doesn't make much sence if you ask me.

We had the energy saving lightbulbs in the hallway chandie and it looked... err... Needless to say we quickly went back to the less enviro-friendly ones.

I think it's great that Australia's taking steps toward efficient energy, but they're going a little nuts - I just got complained at about their unavailability (Again ) and I think it's one of those things that could easily be considered a "small allowence." Not like they're going to cause the apocolypse... sheesh.

Well if it is any consolation to you all, you will still be able to get incandescent globes. Specialist globes i.e. globes for pets, as they are being referred to, will still be brought in by the various importers of reptile globes.

So no real need to rush out and buy everything you see.

Cheers
Dustin
