After alot of consideration i have decided i am going to buy a hatchling scrub python. I have my specialist permit and got the click clack set up, however i am going to build the final enclosure before I buy the snake, therefore no one can say to me well what are you going to do when it gets bigger.

I have build large enclosures with MDF and painted them up real nice with glass sliding doors, however i dont know whether an enclosure as large as this can be built with MDF and i also dont believe the glass doors are that practical. I was thinking a pine frame, sheet of wood for the walls, however I do not know what wood i should use, then for the door i would use etiher a door (bedroom door) or some other form of hinged door. I would like to incorporate glass into this however have not worked with it before and would not know how to install.

I have atleast a 3m square to work with, other room can be made.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and please no comments on whether or not i should keep a scrub python as that decision has already made.

If anyone has made a large display enclosure please post pics and once again advice is greatly appreciated. If possible could you please also add how much it cost you to build.

Thank You

3 meter square is a huge enclosure.
I wouldnt paint MDF, when you can get it in a great varity of colours
What state are you in, as I may be able to help you out with suppliers for your materials.
They will pre cut sheets to your needs, but the sheets come in a max size of 2.4 meters by 1.2 meters.
Cheers Andy.

i once saw a guys enclosure, it was for a adult pair of scrubbys. would have been 2 meters long, 1 meter wide and perhaps 1 1/2 meter high. was STACKS of room for them to move around.
cheers

hay just wondering the best way 2 go about keeping tempreture of my tank is it better to house the light inside of the tank or in a lamp shade on top of tank it is a 45 by 45 by 45 it is a 100w globe any ideas would b great

100 watt seems high for that size, bulletprrof kid,if your keen to build a cage of such proportions, have u considered using a double glass sliding door as the door and viewing area, its strong as glass and would be perfect for such a cage, its how ill probably set up my frilly/mertons set up

If not a sliding glass door, you could try windows with aluminium frames. They can be purchased very cheaply second hand and are easy to lock and move. For better heat retention, you may be able to find double-glazed ones. Try the local scrap recyclers, that's where we get them and they also have glass doors.

in all honesty 3mtres sqaure its plenty/if not too much room, and they do grow fast but not that fast lol. it will be at least 2 years before you need to look at getting a huge enclosure like that. i have quite a scrubs,i have one that is just over a year old and is around 2.4mtres long which is pretty big for her age. she is kept in a enclosure 900Lx600hx600deep and thats more then enough room at the moment.
but yeah as i said you will have plenty of time to up grade cages if you are going to get a hatchling.

cheers smithy.

this is the biggest thread hijack ive seen on APS!!:shock: Whats that got to do with bulletproofkids question nosk1???

I would use MDF and get an aluminium framed door attached to it. I've currently got an enclosure and the internal measurements are 1800 x 1200 x 700. You shouldn't have too much trouble expanding on an enclosure this size if you do it right. Also, if you are planning on going 3m cubed you might as well just use a spare bedroom and install a glass door. It would be quicker and easier.

here is my scrub enclosure. It is 1800high 1800 wide 600 deep. Simple tiered platforms and an elevated hide box works fine for me. All the platforms and hide box have raised lips to give the snake some grip and purchase. The hide has a hinged lid to help with cleaning (what the snake is sitting on in the pics). I also opted for acrylic instead of glass to keep the door weight down. I run 2 x 250w ceramic heaters positioned over the hide.

ps. excuse the dried blood on the acrylic door ;)
