We are mounting a fight to prevent a company called Cape Alumina P/L gaining mining rights in the Wenlock River Basin & the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve.

The Wenlock River is described by Professor Craig Franklin as "...an ecosystem that doesn't fit under any classification."

It is home to 75 species of birds, 16 species of amphibian and 25 species of reptile, inlcuding the endangered Red Goshawk, Palm Cockatoo, Speartooth Shark & Spotted Cuscus.

The Wenlock River has the greatest diversity of freshwater fish of any Australian River.

Cape Alumina (who are 17.5% Chinese, 17.5% American, 25% Eastern European and only 40% Australian owned) plan to:

~ dig up 8 - 12 million tonnes of ore per year over 10 - 15 years
~ draw 230 litres of water per second from the Wenlock River
~ build a port at Port Musgrave, that would include dredging Port Musgrave and knocking down mangroves (Instead of using an existing port facility at Weipa)

We are building support to petition the QLD Govt. against giving mining rights to Cape Alumina and to gazette the Wenlock River as a wild river under the Wild Rivers Act 2005.

To do this we need your support, please join us on Facebook as a show of support, by clicking the link on our homepage at www.SaveTheWenlock.com

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Please everyone support this petition! It would be a great loss for all of us it the proposed mine goes ahead in such an unusual and prisitine area.

We are making some really good progress in our fight and have just received a limited run of bumper stickers to promote our cause even further. For only $2.95 (inc. postage) you can help us get the word out to even more people that we will not stand by and watch the destruction of an irreplaceable wilderness habitat. Visit www.SaveTheWenlcok.com for more information.

Here's a pic of our bumper stickers, they are about 153mm x 52mm

They sure have Kristy, they have made excellent progress, and we are in contact with them on this matter and working together to achieve a common goal. I encourage everyone to support The Wilderness Society and us.

I worked for the TWS and know the Wenlock campaigner - he is a top-notch bloke, who knows his stuff, and has a huge passion for the cause.

Being contributing members of groups like this is what gives a campaign power - it's lobby power than wins these fights, not $$$ (not if your on our side, anyway :) ). It's so important to put your hand up, and let the government know that you don't want this stuff to happen.

Good luck, Wenlock!
