Firedrakes are a distant cousin to dragons. They are 'about the size of a hound', can breath fire though usually only do so as part of mating or if really cranky, they have wings and can fly.

Fantus is a small Firedrake in the Magician series by Raymond E Fiest. It is not owned by the magician Kulgan, he just hangs around, gets fed, sleeps in front of the fire, and is otherwise lazy.

I like purple things, (hence the moniker).

Have never heard of them anywhere other than my imagination.
