Hi all,

One of the woodies in my colony has had a bad moult, it looks like it still has some of the old exoskeleton stuck on, which is causing him to be in a contorted shape. I am concerned that his new exoskeleton may set like that which could cause discomfort or disability, possibly even death. Is there a vet which could assist with an emergency like this, or is there some medication or other treatment I could administer myself?

Thank you for your help.

I think the best thing to do is get him treated by a beardie asap, they are woodie specialists.

Thanks Gex

That's pretty insensitive. I understand and respect that some people use woodies to feed insectivorous animals, but clearly I'm asking for help in this case.

Put it out of its' discomfort, by whatever means you feel suitable.

Jeez I'm sorry Sdaji, and here I was thinking you were taking the "mod" out of us.
Try cutting him out of the old exoskeleton.

Thanks Gex

I had one do the same thing, after months of tube feeding he finally passed, it was tragic, but he was a great breeder and produced many leucistic babies. Hope he pulls through for you...

Get it to the VET ASAP, no point trying to fix things like this yourself, especially if minor surgery is required. If you want to take matters into your own hands and take the cheap and dodgy approach  you could put it in the fridge or gas it with CO2 to calm the poor critter down while you remove the troublesome exoskeleton with a scalple or maybe a small amount of oil and tweezers.

It disgusts me that anyone would consider trying to deal with something like this by themselves without proffesional help :( but i wish you and your friend all the best.

Thanks, guys. I'll put this one in the same box as my fish handling thread, but with the opposite score. Looks like it might have been more productive if it had been a mouse. I'll give it a few months and then have another go.

I just bought this lousy t-shirt.

I caught a falling knife just as a bear died, then got taken away with the bulls. Clearly I was very happy.

Injecting bleach into live-bearing snakes works by the way! Pictures coming soon!

I had a big night last night.... 2 hours sleep and now i'm at work....... the last thing on my mind is a decrepid woodie with exfoliation problems!!!!!

if we are going to help him we need to now the setup, enclosure size, what type of heating, hot spot temps, ambient temp, the critters diet etc, for gods sake hang in there woody

I don't touch drugs (well, alcohol once in a while, but I haven't had much lately). I'm congenitally weird (some may use less flattering adjectives), I don't need drugs.

I thought someone would catch the drift of my falling knife, bull and bear story though, and the bleach stuff is pretty exciting. The song is from a whacked out YouTube video.

I made the story about the woody up though. I don't have any problems with my woodies.
