went into a "pet shop" today around the wangara area to look at a few bits and pieces and was mortified to see that EVERY viv with a rep in it had faeces in there. and i am not talking about little bits left behind from cleaning out the waste, i mean the whole thing... one tank had quite a sizeable carpet in it with a quite impressive effort right near its Hide opening. But what i think is far worse, was that there were 4 completely dry waterbowls.. BONE DRY.. and others had barely enough to cover the base of the bowl...

didnt end up buying anything, didnt say anything although thinking about it now i really should have.

end of rant

its just so sad and this is why I dont like pet shops keeping livestock...and every time I come across a good place and begin to change my opinion I hear something like this and it goes right back there again

name names i live here in perth and i wanna make sure i dont go there, and if a shop has that bad conditions people should know.
dont protect them i say!!

oh yep have heard of them! pity we dont have more of a selection of shops here huh. What do you keep stevesmart?

That shop is usually ok from my experience - maybe the owner has been away?

petshops don't even care about the animals only money bet the people wouldnt like to be in a box with faeces

100% agree, im so against reps in petshops because they are usually (some exceptions) neglected the employees dont know or understand them, and i have been witness to them being mistreated in a shop. So i refuse to go in there for anything now. ive seen left over sheds that have been there for days, no water, no light covers, no hides. arghhhh! i really dislike petshops

I had a horror story that was slightly different. I went to a pet shop and purchased a Black Rock Scorpion. Generally I have seen the effect of the pet trade on wild populations of Australian Tarantulas and Scorpions, with local extinctions taking place due to people collecting for the pet trade. So I was adamant that I wanted captive bred. I was assured that yes they were. A few weeks after I got her home, she gave birth to 16 little Scorpions. Within a few weeks of getting my first Scorpion, I was learning to care for babies! I found homes for a few of them but I decided to find an area where they are native and let the rest go before mum decided to eat them. If you want the best results go to a specialist.

so what your saying is because it had babies it MUST of been wild caught ? how did u come to that conclusion?

I wouldn't have considered the shop in question as a 'pet shop', they specialise in fish and reptiles. Agree though that messy cages don't look good, but could be that they were all fed at same time and person who cleans wasn't working that day?? Same with water, no big issue if no water for a few days.

The original post said that the enclosures were full of mess, not just little bits. That doesn't happen in one day, one week or even a month.

they can't in NSW but they are looking at changing that

i'd prefer it if they didn't, animals in poorly kept conditions, and exposes reptile keeping to the idiot masses. Having reptiles not in pet shops means you have to go out of you way to get one, which stops most dodgey people keeping them.

I was in the same shop on Sunday, I was very disappointed also. I did buy a snake from them about 2 months ago and all enclosures were clean then.
The enclosures were in a bad way on Sunday, If all the snakes had been fed on the same day I doubt that they all messed the enclosures the same day. Some enclosures had a few weeks of mess in them. One water bowl looked as if it had algea (spelling?) growing. I suggest tha perhaps when we see this sort of thing if we are not comfortable talking to staff or shop owners, we should notify DEC of our concern. I am sure they would look into the matter.

They say you can tell a lot about a person by looking at their shoes.......Well I suppose you can also tell a lot about a keeper by looking at their enclosures.

I am very surprised to hear this about this shop as everytime I have visited this shop their cages have been very clean and furthermore they have ( or perhaps used to have ? ) a reptile keeper working there with a solid knowledge on correct retile husbandry. I will ring the owner of the premises ( who I know faily well ) tomorrow and see what the go is.
