you need a platform (piece of wood fake vine etc) on the side the bulb is so the snake can get up to the heat and put a smaller globe in 50-60, the 100 is still to high. I think you will find the lamp cover is only rated up to 75

no need to buy the specialists bulbs just buy them from bunnings for like 3-4 bucks each and put the probe near an elevated basking spot as its important for him to have a cool spot to retreat to

ok well, i will put the 100w in until i get a 60w bulb. Also what do u guys think of the ceramic heat emitters? r they better then the infa red bulbs or is it just a personal choice?

+1 for breeders choice, i used aspen for about a month and it was a pain ... you have to get the snake out to feed it (so the shavings dont spear your snakes insides) and it doesnt hold heat well with a heat mat ...
also +1 for a smaller globe, a 100W one is probably still going to be too big... you can pick them up for 10 bucks with shipping on ebay, or from a petshop for 20

these are MY opinions, which i have gather from my very limited (compared to some) experience...
you will find your own way of doing things that suits you and monty

Kel

PS... when i got my first snake (a childrens) i called im monty, but the name never stuck as i souldnt see him saying "HES NOT THE MOSIAH, HE A VERY NAUGHTY BOY" haha

Ceramics are more expensive but last a lot longer. We are gradually changing over all of our infra-reds.
Personally, I like to be able to see at a glance that they are on and heating, rather than go around and have to feel each enclosure to check that the bulb hasn't blown.
If you just have one or two enclosures, though, that is not such a worry.

I have a digital monitor and the probe sits on the bottom and it reads 30degrees. I havnt got a thermostat yet im getting one off ebay. i have a spare 100w infa red bulb would that be better?

if you have your probe on the bottom of the tank and its reading 30c, then i would think you new pal is a little on the warm side. in your setup the floor of the tank should be cooler than the top. and as has been suggested already, get a branch or something else so he can get up higer to the heat, and take the heat mat away. put in an extra hide somewhere on the floor that is as far away from the heat lamp as possible, and one near the warmer side. move the probe to where the 'cold' hide is, that needs to be about 22c so he has somewhere to cool off if he gets to hot, when you get your branch in there (one from the garden will do ) put the probe where you think he will sit to get the most heat he can, and that should read around 32c
If you can get him higher you will be able to use a lower wattage lamp - like the 60w suggested, and he will still be able to cool down if he wants to.

regards to the 'how often to handle him' i'd leave him alone for a couple of weeks until you know he is feeding really well (out of his enclosure if you keep the aspen in there) and then you only need to leave him alone for a couple of days if he has eaten, and some can get cranky when they are near to shedding.
