Just wondering if peoples dogs or any other pets interact with their snakes. When I have my 8 month old jungle out our 17 month old sheltie is very interested. He is well trained and I am confident that he will never disobey my command to leave it alone lol.

The jungle is also eager and usually makes its way towards the sheltie. They usually just sit there smelling each others noses until the dog gets tickled by the jungles tongue flicking on his nose. So he usually moves away after 10 or so seconds then comes back.

The first time this happened i was unaware our puppy was in the house. I looked away for a second and then i saw the jungle and puppy face to face staring at each other. Shat myself at first but then made sure he left it alone.

If they are both in the same vicinity i will sit next to them to ensure nothing happens.

Anyone got any similar observations with their pets?

Cheers

That is a gorgeous picture of them both. :) Any dogs I've had....and I've had 3 since I got my snake, have taken absolutely no notice of each other, mind you, I haven't encouraged any contact.

I have a pic of my wife with our 8ft Bredli on couch and my rottie x border collie looking on curiously. Cant post it because I enjoy living and marrage aint bad either.
I wont let our cats or ferrets near the snakes even though I could trust one of each to do nothing but have a sniff and a look, because they are small enough to fit nicely into the belly of our larger snakes. I think snakes are influenced by the size of potential meals, and I include humans as part of this. For the most part I think if snakes could eat us they would, but because they cant, they dont try.
Thus they see us as a threat, a warm spot, or something to big to eat so just ignore it and it will go away.

That's the most adorable photo!

I have a Dalmatian who loves to watch them in their enclosures and my olive curls up in his bed when she's out lol

He is a little too excitable though to predict exactly what he'd do if they were out with him so i won't risk trying to introduce them.

my dogs all get very jealous of the attention im paying to something else when i have any of my snakes out. my shetlies are very happy to just let the snakes wander over them, the snakes pay no notice and often just curl up amongst the nice warm fur. im more guarded about my young dogs who get a bit excited though. my dogs are all thoroughly socialised with all small animals so they have pretty much zero prey drive.

very cute pic of your sheltie, is he from a breeder?

mine do not get along.. the cat is very curious, and i think she would hurt the snakes, as she tried a little swipe, and that was it.. i dont let her near them now. my dog, jack russel hates them as she got a fright when my md struck at her.. she justs sits on the other couch and pretends to be asleep when i get the snakes out.. i was told by a breader that they will get used to each other and live in harmony, but i doubt it.. great pic btw..

My Aussie BD and MD, he can't help himself, even after a few taps on the face he still hasn't learnt....

Haven't shown my snake to any of my other animals (guess that'd be because I don't have the snake yet...), but my cockatiel will literally bask with my shingleback, beardie, and I believe he had a man-crush on my massive blue-tongue (when it's convient I'll put up the pics of him sitting on top of the cushion my bluey was under and giving my bluey a kiss).

I don't know if I'd trust my dog with any of my other pets, but hey... they reptiles have always got the bird to fuss over them!

My pitty is snake crazy, she always wants to give them all kisses, especially Lucifer (adult darwin) such a lover

That's her "I bet you'd be tasty" look. Let's just say they're not left alone together!!

Here's my border collie 'Khan' keeping watch over my little bredli....which has since grown quite a bit.

He will sniff them occasionally when I'm holding one but he's been taught to stay away, just incase he comes across a venomous one in the yard. Thankfully that hasn't happened yet.

Most of the time though he shows no interest and prefers to keep away. He's had a few licks on the nose but no bites yet.

My cat is obsessed with my jungle he stares at her all the time and often at night I find them both staring at each other through the glass!! It's cute but I wouldn't let them near each other outside of the enclosure my cat is waaay to unpredictable to trust.

i 100% trust my dogs around my snakes but not to much the snakes..the dogs have no interest at all..just look over and think meh an keep on doing what their doing haha
was watching the footy out back one day had one of the bigger darwins out on the lawn and the dog was laying in the sun on the lawn..snake cruzed over and climbed straight over the dog like he was a log or somthing haha the dog just turned his head looked and then dropped his head back down and shut his eyes and went back to sleep...he thought it was just one big "long" pat hahah :D
I dont encourage the interaction it just sometimes happens lol

My sister got him from a private breeder. He was the only puppy. If you are interested in more pics let me know

I was sure this thread would be trouble when I read it last night ;) Well done, APS!

I wouldn't trust my dogs at this stage with the snakes - Kaiser would freak and stomp on it as he tried to get away, who knows what Lexi would do?

They are happy to sit on the lawn with the beardie though. Lexi only occasionally walks ups and woofs in the beardie's face, and when Cranky puffs up and hisses at her, she smiles, wags, and sits back down again. You can't tell me she doesn't know she's being a bitch ;)

My old dog Zoe would only sit and watch my pythons when i put them in the sun but she would attack and kill any wild brown snakes that came into the yard .
Somehow Zoe senced danger and her instinks took over before i ever had a chance to call her off.
I wish that Zoe never did this to the brown snakes but it was her choice .She was lucky not to be bitten also.
I usually would just relocate them to the closest bit of bush .
Zoe also would find and bark at turtles hibernating or lizards in the wild but not attack them.
She was one very smart dog as well as loyal pet.
