Taronga celebrates third elephant calf
It’s a girl! I am delighted to announce the birth of Taronga’s third Asian Elephant calf overnight - a female calf, the first to be born at Taronga. Mother Pak Boon was in secondary labour for 20 minutes before this latest addition to our breeding program made a very welcome entrance at 1.12am. Specialist elephant keepers and vets were in attendance throughout. Pak Boon and the calf, weighing in at a very healthy 120kg, are doing very well and she has already suckled, gaining vital nourishment from her mother’s colostrum during the first feed.

This birth is another wonderful milestone for Taronga’s conservation breeding program for Asian Elephants, which are endangered in the wild. The calf does not have a name as yet and keepers are aiming to choose a special name that will mark the circumstances of the birth and the heritage of the elephants at Taronga Zoo.

Incredibly, this female calf is born four years to the day that Pak Boon and her herd-mates arrived from Thailand to start the first Conservation Breeding program for Asian Elephants in our region. This breeding program has seen great successes both here and at Melbourne Zoo and the birth of this fifth calf (third at Taronga Zoo) is a remarkable and very special way to mark the four-year anniversary.

Regular videos, photos and updates from the elephant keepers will be posted on our website here so check back regularly to stay up-to-date with our newest calf’s progress. With the warmer weather around the corner it may also be possible to see Pak Boon and her calf out in the elephant exhibit in the next few days. We will keep up-to-date information on the best times to see all of our elephants here, so make sure you check the latest advice before visiting.

I am sure you are as delighted as I am by this wonderful news and the ongoing success of our elephant breeding program and I would like to pass on my sincere thanks for your continued support.

That's great news!
I had a wonderful time meeting elephants in Thailand. Their eyes are beautiful!

I am in love with the elephants.... Went to the zoo a couple of months ago and spent ages just standing there watching them play under the hose and swimming.... Could have stayed there all day!!!! I am now looking to go to roar and snore just so I have the opportunity to get up close with them....
