Still have to add melamine veneer strip, allow silicone in joints to cure, add metal fly screen on both open segments for ventillation, add light and heat fixtures, add reptiles.
thanks everyone. i will do a cutting list for you tonight or tomorrow stevo2 with a step by step process. the glass will be sliding so i can get to my pets from the front and easily clean, feed etc.
in SA i need a specialist licence to keep frillies so i will have to hold off on them. (im only 17 and still living at home) they are by far my favorite reptile though. you lucky bugga. haha
Okay so here goes the build process,
first step was to figure out my sizing then make a cutting list.
Cutting list:
70x19 pine:
9@ 600mm
6@ 2000mm
4@ 1200mm
From here i went to my local hardware store who cut it all for me. it was around 2 dollars per meter i think but the cutting was free.
I bought some right angle things im not sure what they are called but they were great for putting some of it together.
I made both of the sides first using for each two 1200 lengths and 4 600 lengths.
Then the sides were attached together using the 2000mm lengths with the right angle bracket things-
Next it was stained and 4 coats of water based varnish were applied. it was an ebony stain-
After that i went to bunnings for my Melamine board. Before i had gone i measured every area where i needed melamine and then drew onto paper the most economical way of cutting the pieces out of 2400x1200x16mm boards. it came out to 3 boards needed at 35 dollars each. they charged $1 per cut. Then the melamine was fixed in place with a small bead of liquid nails and screws.
Then the lid was added using some butt hinges. this was a last minute thing but i thought it would make access so much easier especially for light changes.
after that sellys glass silicone was used which is aquarium safe with a recommended week curing time before the use in aquariums to seal all edges and gaps etc.
I just bought two flood lights already wire in housings for 14 bucks each and they will be used at basking lights for my reptiles.
On thursday i will be getting some glass track before i then measure the size of the acrylic sheets i need.
