I used to keep Piranhas, about 20 years ago when i lived overseas. They are extremely shy when kept in an aquarium, would hide in a flash when i entered the room. I used to have to turn the lights off in the room so they couldn't see me to observe them. I put this down to them feeling vulnerable in crystal clear water. They would be very timid and skittish if i put my hand in the tank for whatever reason. Fantastic at feeding time though, would shred goldfish to the spine in seconds, leaving a tank full of glistening scales like one of those toys you tip upside down to make it snow. I did feel somewhat sorry for the goldfish...
