These pictures were taken a week back at my Mum's beach house at McCrae on the Mornington Peninsula south of Melbourne.

I know they are ground orchids and probably in the Nodding Green Hood family but beyond that ???

There were hundreds of them in a couple of square meters of lawn.

mate as a guess id say possibly Pterostylis pedunculata
but the green hood alliance is huge

Ok - I have another one to id. It is obviously a Pterostylis but I have yet to be able to track it down either in any of my orchid books or on the net. It is a bit bigger than the maroon hood but does not have the two "ears" that poke up from the side. The key characteristics seem to be:
  • Flowers in March and all through April
  • Does not have "ears" or any spikes at the side of the flower opening
  • It has a kind of tongue that pokes out from the opening (sorry have not got a good pic of this )
  • Has a long flowering season and they do not all come up together
  • Growing in sandy soild on the Mornington Peninsula

We have two patches of them currently in our garden which I am very pleased about.

It has been suggested that it might be an unnamed species - perhaps Pterostylis herptraderii :)
