So I just 'inquired' about elapids of any kind caring for in the ACT and apparently nope there is no rules its just a blanket not for private keepers at all... what a load of crock..

Also BHPs & Womas are considered Class 3 license, which means you need a Class 2 license (Diamond Python, Stimson, Carpet) for a year first and before you can even get that you need a Class 1 (random reptiles) for 2 years before that...

I'm not saying I want elapids right now but in the future I was hoping to at least maybe get a RBB... :(

oh well you could allways move. queanbeyan is close. but depending on what you wish to keep it could talk alot longer than 3years of different license classes to get the needed license

just move man who wants to live with government types anyway, even if fireworks and porno and weed is legal its still not worth it.

Hmm not to sure about that Veenarm,....at the last Snakes Alive Show (Pics here) they had a Death adder so someone is able to...unless they travelled from Queanbeyan.

Sorry to put a downer on ya but Fireworks can no longer be bought like they used to in ACT and the pot thing,...well I've not heard anyone spruking it legal as such, esp when ACT has just started the random testing of drugs for drivers last month akin to the rest of the states. But you'll be happy to know your std's are still able to be acquired in Fyshwick ;)

i thought it might go be like a seperate class vens and display?
im just guessing wildly from bits n pieces of info here n there

Smithers is right re the marijuana. Possessing a non trafficable amount (ie small enough for personal use only) is not legal in the ACT. It's merely decriminalised. So if you are found with it in your possession, you essentially get a ticket like a traffic offence. At least that is how I understand it anyway. I am no expert but, it is how it was explained to me.

My reading on the keeping of elapids in the ACT is the same as Veenarm. From what I read, you can only keep them for display (as in like a zoo), or for scientific purposes (as in to dissect or I assume develop things like anti venom). They don't list a terribly broad range of species in Class B or C for that matter. Still, as someone yet to acquire a snake, I look forward to being able to own one at all.

For the record, I like living in Canberra. Moved here from Sydney where I grew up over a decade ago. As parochial as they come now :).

Hey Trigger,

I have no idea on the vens side of licensing, just had seen one and thought it may have been possible...I was lucky enough to have my Stimmie for 2 yrs in Sydney before moving here and thus fast tracking licences. The rules to what you can acquire at each licence level really needs an overhaul,.....bearded dragons are off licence but a thick-tail gecko is a class 2 go figure.

thats the gayest law ever,i enquired about Canberra licencing when i applied for a job there and they have the worst herp licencing in the country.
You have to own a lizard for 2 years before you can even have a childrens python

Damn....and I thought Tassie was bad.

Fill an application for "herpetology permit"....pay for stamp.....post to hobart.....2-3 weeks later receive permit.....go out and catch biggest tiger snake you can and put it in living room
