Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is the right area to post this or not. Mods feel free to move it if you feel it should be elsewhere.

I am currently researching the types of disinfectant people are using & on what surfaces they are using them on, specifically for the use with herps. I'm not interested in what people are cleaning the kitchen bench top with, just enclosures/tanks, what kind of herp lives in the enclosure/tank & what product they are currently using.

I am researching this in conjunction with my bachelor of science that I am currently undertaking. I am trying to show the difference between perceived hygiene due to commercialisation & the different levels of hygiene that are generally kept within different social groups, i.e. private collectors, zoos, vets, commercial breeders, etc.

If anyone would care to add their information to this it would help me with my studies to no end.
I don't need to know how many herps you have, where you live or any personal information. I understand that people are wary about giving out information in regard to their pets in light of some recent events, that is why I thought forums would be a better vehicle to obtain information.
All information gathered will be anonymous!

Thanks everyone for their help.

Thats true geckorider but it doesnt give the information that I am after.
Hopefully I can get some numbers reply so I can add it as a cross section to the data base

Well I keep a Murray darling python, she's almost 2 years old and I clean my enclosure with dilute vinegar, does this count? Anything that can be removed gets soaked in a warm water/vinegar mix over night when needed.

The enclosure is melamine, and I use fake turf with absorbant paper towel underniether as a substrate, which is removed and cleaned in the same vinegar/Water mix and left to soak.

Thanks Mike, but what is the surface the enclosure is made from? i.e, melamine, sealed pine, unsealed pine, plastic, glass, etc.
Thanks again for your reply

I use F10 on all my enclosures and tubs ( plastic, glass and melamine ).

I even use it to clean the floor and the sink in the herp room which is laminate and stainless steel.

I also use F10 for cleaning, sometimes i might use a weak solution of bleach(just home brand all the same).
In some of my enclosures I use indoor/outdoor carpet the green stuff. when I clean them I take the carpet out & wash with washing powder which removes all dirt & bacteria. all the enclosured are wiped out with F10 or at least bleach.
The water containers are normally scrubbed with hot water weekly.

There was an article written about all of this a year or two back by Peter Krause in I think a reptile australia magazine.

Cheers
Ian

i use f-10 to clean out enclosures. marine carpet gets hosed down left to dry then hit with f-10. water bowls or any other ceramics or plastics get washed up in the sink with dishwashing liquid then rinsed

i use a natural washing liquid diluted in hot water around the enclosure. but hands i use something like purell alcahol cleaner

I use white king (bleach) diluted in water with a drop of dishwashing liquid, my enclsure surfaces consist of a mixture of sealed mdf and melamine. Ive been doing it this way for around 20 years.

Thanks everyone for their replys so far, its been very helpful.
I would just like to point out to everyone that I am not judging who is right & wrong, just trying to get a cross section & what is used.
Thanks all

Bleach and water. Used on melamine and plastic tubs. I went to the vets here one day asking for F10, they had never heard of it before. I asked what they did and they said bleach and water so thats the way I went. Unsure why peoples preference is to use F10, it's expensive compared to bleach which does the same thing. Does it have a better smell?

i use a reptile disinfectant i got in store on the inside of enclosures(mix of plastic tubs and sealed wood. Anything that can be soaked is done in highly diluted bleach and hot water

i use a drop of dishwashing liquid in warm water to wipe out my enclosures, glass and melamine. recently got some 2nd hand melamine enclosures that i wiped down with a metho dampended cloth then left in the sun for a day

Virkon. Glass enclosure with a swcp.

Hot soapy water then rinsed well for regular cleans, to disenfect for reasons such as quarantine I usually use Betadine and/or boiling water

Boiling water and vinegar and scrub. Then wash it off with boiling water again and leave in the sun all day some times 2 days.
