Looking at possibly getting a small 4 bed weatherboard relocated, wondering if anyone has done it, brief description/approx size of the house you relocated, distance you moved it and cost would be greatly appreciated(and company recomendations also appreciated by PM). We are looking at moving it from Melbourne to south coast NSW.

Any other tips to make it easier would be great

ive seen this done many times before, but ive never liked the sounds of it unless the house was made to be movable. as with the structure of the house and condition it is in.

my tip on making it easier.. sell up and relocate yourselfs and the money :)

It's not our house, we have a vacant block that we need to put a house on. My parents are buying this place and intend to knock down and rebuild and have pffered us the house for free. It's a really nice house and would be a shame to bulldoze it

If you have the right removalists you will save a fortune and have no dramas
Dont even dream about getting a 'mate' with a low loader
Experts know the exact road rules and how to shift them
Rest are just potential disasters

We moved 70 houses from a town called Twizel in NZ a long time ago
Bought them for $2000 each and sold them for $20,000 each
Costs approx $1000 per trip

So long as the house itself was originally strongly built it is a simple exercise
If it was badly built you will have problems

Ground work; ie land access and house preparation should be perfect with everything ready
This includes disconnecting power and water and cutting the pipes so they are easy to join again
Also includes removing lots of piles so the truck can back straight under
Simply replace those piles with easily removable braces
You can do most of this yourself
That way crew arrives
Starts under house with jacks
Truck arrives and in one hour they are off to new place

If a big house needs cut in 2 bits get an engineers report first
But most older homes were built like the proverbial brick out-houses

If piles are ready there; another hour and the truck is gone

Relocating to hilly areas can cost a lot more labour and preparation time

snakeynewbie I'd be doing a lot of homework on this one. Shifting the house is big $ these days.
Not just the relocation, the escorts for the truck/s the back ground work regarding power lines ect. Maybe having to book police to cordon off areas.

Good Luck!

Yeah we were working on the theory that it may cost around $50,000 even. It's still a lot cheaper for us to do that than it is to build a new house

Thats a beautiful little place, and your right even at $50,000 it's still cheaper than anything else you wouyld have to do. Good luck with it all.

Mate $50k might not be enough, I moved a few houses around Brisbane with a previous employer. Even a single house with no cut cost around $25k stumped and that was only relatively local moves. If you are talking two or three pieces over quite a decent distance you will be looking at some massive costs.

Thanks Ryan, that's the sort of info we are trying to suss out, I guess ultimately we'll have to get a quote but we really have no idea other than knowing it would be pricey.

looks solid enough
Biggest dramas are 2
tiles on roof will probably slide everywhere if you have to cut it, unless well secured
If you have to cut everything must be exactly spot on with timing
2 trucks with one big work team and both trucks leaving together
that way only need one escort front and rear
probably only allowed move predawn if going near a highway

If you get mates to do all the preparation you can cut costs
You can do all the checks about power lines etc by contacting councils etc

[Should have moved ours now
Would have made a bloody fortune]

We can do a fair bit of the prep ourselves probably, hubby is handy and we have a few tradies in the families who'd help for a slab of beer ;)

Sit down and get a couple of quotes now

That way you can start to make an informed descision

Melbourne to south coast NSW is a LONG way to move a house, and the roads aren't exactly quiet. I would imagine escort vehicles, restricted hours of travel etc would probably mean its several days travel at least. Over that distance the house would get quite a shaking too. People used to move houses up in Darwin a lot but that was just from the city to rural blocks 40-50kms away. Think that used to be around $25K years ago. I think you'd be lucky to get out of it for under 100K.
4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms...its a pretty big house...good luck!
