I think it should be a persons choice completely. People should be able to spend their money the way they want. I don't want kids but if I did I wouldn't be bothered by gender and I'd probably even leave it as a surprise. How people spend their money doesn't bother me. I just personally know that I wouldn't be 'playing God,' as they say.

there's an article that mentioned gender selection in children is by most genetic, its not a randomize pick, if you and your partner have qualities that suit a girl (i.e. soft features, etc), the greater your chances of having a daughter and vice versa. With that said, why would i want to mess with nature? And coming from a culture where males are prized over female children (yes, i'm asian and have heard heaps of stories), i don't think its "fair" if you will.

I suspect you're confusing gender and sex.

Whilst gender is determined to some degree by pre-natal hormone exposure, good luck trying to choose the gender of your child.
Sex, maybe.. But not gender.

Measuring your 2nd to 4th finger digit ratio is considered a reasonably good way of determining pre-natal hormone exposure:

Digit ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
finger length ? Finger length & DIGIT RATIO hand news!

I guess what I'm saying is, just because you may *physically* get a girl, doesn't mean she will grow up to be much of a girl.
Excess exposure to androgens would cause a shift in the development of gender identity in the fetus..

I cant say that I would never do it, because I have one of each.... I will say when I found out I was pregnant with my second and she was actually in my womb not the fallopian tube I was ecstatic because after ovarian Cancer and a lot of other stuff I wasnt supposed to be able to fall pregnant again. I was grateful to be pregnant but at the same time had a little yearning for a Daughter, I was blessed not only to be pregnant but to have my Daughter :) I would like to say I would be happy with whatever sex I got, however I cant say that I wouldnt consider gender selection because I havent walked in your shoes .MR I feel it is a personal choice that is between Husband and Wife(or same sex partners)and they should not be judged by society as society do not walk in their shoes. Many live in glass houses and should not throw stones..........

FYI: the best way if you want to measure your digit ratio, is to photocopy your hand, blown up to say A3, and measure the index and ring fingers with a ruler.. That seems to be the most accurate way

My mother always wanted a little girl that she could put in a dress...

instead she got me!

I liked to play with figurine army men and toy cars and trucks when I was a kid, then I grew up to have pet snakes and ride a motorcycle :D

Wow that's truly amazing? I'm so dumb, I thought sperm determined the sex of the child?
If I have sex with a gentle faced man I'm more likely to have a girl. excellent, thanks : )

Fair enough, and good attitude. Not what I expected, as most people I've come across who say I want a boy/girl have ridiculous expectations
about how they want their child to be.. Almost to the point of having a blueprint of the child's life.

It's believed pre-natal hormones in early stages of fetal development will determine physical sex, and in later weeks, gender identity when the brain is developing..
And, as always, socialisation / environment play a part.

I believe that we should all be mindfull on how many children we have. I have 2 boys and do not want anymore. We are bringing up our children in a world that is getting harder for the earth to sustain. Be blessed with what you are able to birth be that male or female. would you have stopped having children if you had 2 boys and a girl? Or did you keep going until you had a girl after so many boys?

ok, i failed to completely clarify, apologies. The primary author of the study was a Mr. Satoshi Kanazawa, PhD, in the Journal of Theoretical Biology;
volume 239 Issue 4 pages 450-459,
volume 233 issue 4 pages 589-599, and
volume 235 issue 4 pp. 583-590 amongst others if anyone is bothered looking it up.

And yes, as the journal title suggest it IS theoretical, as in it entertains the idea/hypothesis and aims to prove/disprove it with a debatable outcome, much like evolution is (yes, i may have opened a can of worms here but so be it). It may be a "load of crap" (because as i said, debatable theory) but i do do my research before posting.

Seems like a total waste of money to me personally. But if its that important to a person, why not?
As was mentioned earlier, we have a world in which we use science to choose all sorts of things (both important and not so important)... nose shape, boob size, whether someone in a coma lives or dies, curing those with life threatening diseases, IVF and it goes on and on.
Personally I wasn't bothered whether I had a girl or a boy, I ended up with my little girl and was thrilled. I dont want anymore kids so trying for any particular sex next isnt an issue for me. But in this day and age where everyone is guilty of something 'unnatural' in their lives, I dont think its anyones place to criticize someone for wanting to select the gender of their child if its really that important to them.

If it's what someone wants then sure they can go for it. Personally though, i think a better option would be to adopt a kid of the sex they want.

Aww :)

My mum has been happy to accept that I'm not very feminine, lipstick is as girly as I get. My brother was more girly than me when he was a kid haha.

I bet your parents are asking themselves the same question ;)

people need to understand that in scientific terms if it says its a theory that means there have been loads and loads of evidence and trails regarding it and it is widely accepted by the scientific community

Maybe you could arrange to swap a couple of boys with a couple who have all girls.

I have seen how much u all love a good debate lol so here go's.

Do u believe couples should be able 2 choose the gender of their children? I do.

I as many of you know have 6 boys and whilst i love everyone of them dearly i am bloody pissed off that i missed out on a girl. I am not dissapointed having six sons i am simply dissapointed that i dont have a daughter.
I feel for the couples that cant have children infact my heart breaks 4 them BUT it doesnt chnge the way i feel!

If i had a spare 30 g i would def have played with nature 2 have my pink one.

Ok now off u go start telling me how i should be greatful that i can even have kids and maybe even abuse me....i dont care because that how i feel.
