I'm going with Austrelaps ramsayi based on the description and photo.
I don't know what it is, but 10 bucks says I would have dived into thick scrub to try and get bitten catching it :lol:
I've seen it done (my boss) but I haven't tried it yet. Wouldn't want to get my clothes dirty =)Ive been known to do a flying tackle to catch an elapid, brown or black.

Yep, Highlands Copperhead is a common name for Austrelaps ramsayi. They're fairly common in the upper mountains. The ones I've seen in the mountains have been very dark on top with the pale copper-edged scales on the sides, just like your photo.Wow that looks just like it!
