I brought 2 cheap glass brand new [made in china] enclosures on ebay one was damaged & one was fine no problems other than it need to be cleaned of small bits of glass left there during manufacturing.
The damaged one was replaced today open the box same thing sliding doors came off and smashed the glass.
They just put the metal door lock inside the enclosure and the sliding doors are on the tracks not tied up so the just fall out during transport.
Starting to be annoying now

I got one of those too, it came packed in heaps of bubble wraps and enough styrofoam to make a new fake rock wall background! :) There are a few different sellers selling the same products and they might pack them differently but I can't be happier with mine.

Congrats , keep buying of the net from OS and there will be no shops left in Australia. :)

Unfortunately you get what you pay for  three things would have rang alarm bells in my head
1/ cheap
2/chinese
3/ from the net

The fact it was also glass (fragile)

I agree with sclero, everyone buying online is killing shops..... when the shops are all gone, everything will have to come online.... no choice.... then we will all be at the sellers mercy. At least you (almost) got what you paid for ;) Terrible to think that the person in china has your details? Hopefully you still have your identity :?

These are usually sold on ebay, through an australian dealer, and who can blame anyone my local shop wants $150-200 for a 18x18x18 exo-terra which is just ridiculous we are already being held at the mercy of shops.

The lack of local retailers (big or small) selling online is enticing shoppers to buy from overseas competitors. For convenience and lower price reason, more and more people shop online but sadly Australia is rather reluctant to keep pace. Back in 2000 when I worked in Norway, everyone had high speed (cable) Internet with unlimited data download and I could buy movie ticket and even paid for parking with my mobile phone. Fast forward 12 years into the future I can't even have cable and I live 10 minutes away from Sydney CBD. Mobile banking has only just recently been established.

I am in full support of Australian small (and big) businesses to thrive. In fact I specialise in setting up website and on-line store for small businesses and work-at-home-mums (being one myself) and they do very well doing their business online, without having to pay expensive office/shop-front rent and massive overhead bills. eBay, etsy and Facebook are good examples of how on-line trading enables small businesses to compete with big ones. In my opinion, to ensure local Australian businesses can survive is to bring them up to date with where the rest of the world is going.

Here's a rather old article from SMH but it's still a very relevant reading:

Edit: Oops, sorry... I keep forgetting the no link policy! Well, PM me if you're interested in reading it.

So try building your own with goods that are manufactured on our own shores. Any of these pre manufactured things are from O/S regardless of where you buy them from.

Would take to much effort to build tanks of this style, sticking to my starmaid tubs since all the aussie made ones have sliding doors and poor design which i dislike in small tanks. All for buying aussie but alot of aussie reptile stuff is poor quality, purchased aussie reptile foods etc lizards wont eat the junk.

If you don't care about ethics , the environment and global stability buy from china.

oh and quality

i get all my stuff from the net and i save alot of cash doing so. If i can save big $$$$$ from shopping on line then why would i go to a pet shop to get the same thing

yer boyu
i got them off a australian seller just trying to make a dollar
i have seen a major pet store in sydney switch over they used to have only urs [aust company] exo terra now just imports i can not name the store cause of the site rules

I can see where you are coming from but you cant say that exoterra tanks are too expensive. They are the right price for a truely quality priduct. You need to pay for quality and it doesnt come cheap. If you can get by with the cheaper brands then you have found the right market for you. There is always the downside of having poor quality products that are easily broken though.
You can always buy exoterra tanks second hand and have the best of both worlds.

im waiting on my exoterra to get here... very exciting!!! YAY!!!
(sorry couldt hold my excitment in ;))

We made all our own enclosures from Aussie made and sold materials...it ACTUALLY worked out cheaper than buying Over Seas and it met our exact requirements...

In saying that Aussie stores are too expensive, thats because they have to up their prices to cover operational expences because of everyone buying online and overseas...

Its a vicious cycle...

I can only assume this means you don't own any Apple products? Or a mobile phone that is made and assembled in China?

I agree with James Scott. Cheap overseas products are there to give you the options. I am fully aware if I buy a cheap one from eBay it might not last very long (although sometimes they surprise me) and if I want something that last for years I'd buy quality products. I buy cheap sofa because I have 2 toddlers that draw flowers and noodles on them with markers when I look the other way. I bought an expensive tent rather than a Kmart one because I want it to last for years BUT those Kmart ones are great option if you're only going once every two years, isn't it?

What I'm trying to say is, if you buy cheap products please don't complain if it breaks after a year and please don't have unrealistic expectation regarding quality. Although if it breaks on arrival like what happened to the OP I would definitely complain. It's always a risk sending fragile items on post, I know a member here who sells glass enclosures but pick up only or buyer has to arrange his own courier to pick it up because of potential issue like this.

Oh, and please be consistent. If you're all for ethics and environment please ensure that you read all products labels and research each manufacturers. A friend of mine sticks with organics (food and clothing materials) and she sacrifices a lot of other things (such as holidays and eating out) because organic stuff is more expensive but she is consistent so I admire her.

I can't commit 100% to australian products because I just can't afford it and sometimes they're simply not available but if you can and do, I take my hat off and I wish someday I would be able to do the same.

My folks are wholesalers, I run a website and I'm even trying to drum up sales on eBay and I can tell you for certain... No one is buying from all three! But I can totally understand where people are comming from, I'm experiencing the same thing. Why would I buy Mini parts in Aus when I can get them cheaper INCLUDING freight from the PARENT company in England? It's insane!
