Heating a room, instead of an enclosure?

Hey everyone,
I was just wandering if it is possible to simply heat a room, instead of heating each individual enclosure? The problem i see with this is that wouldn't this mean the the animals would not get a hot and a cold side to regulate heat? I was only curious as i think i remember watching an episode of SnakeBytes where the spoke about how they heat the room instead of each individual enclosure? I may be mistaken and thinking of another video?
Thanks,
Harrison

Yeah I've seen the same snakebytes clip and I wondered how the snakes regulate their body temp with no heat gradient in their tubs.

I have a heated room where I house gravid females and juveniles until the outside temperatures are high enough (from late September onwards). The temps fluctuate between 25 (night) and 30 (day), never had any issues with it. I ventilate the room around midday every second day or so get fresh air in.

I heat all the rooms holding reptiles but only to set ambient temps where I want them depending on the season.Enclosure heating does the rest.Too many people seem to think that a 40watt cord/light/mat for example can provide adequate heating when an enclosure is situated in a cool/cold room.

Has anyone set up a solar hotwater unit with copper pipes for heat? I've always thought this would be a cost effective way to heat a room/enclosures with a small pump to circulate the warm water through the pipes.

I have often thought about ripping up my bathroom floor and putting a heat cord under it hahaha..

The water is a good idea but would it be enough or would say an oil or a gas be better? A lot of new heaters being used for outdoor heating are utilising various materials (im not sure of them all, liquid/gas/solid etc) that hold heat well, and are better on cost. I have air-con/heater on in my room to make sure the minimum doesn't drop below a certain point in winter and vice versa in summer.

I was thinking more the cost of power with the solar hot water thing. I know in the UK they have heating in the concrete slab which has warm water running through it. This heats the house. (Grand Designs :p)
In-Floor Heating

snowman , my sister works for a lodge in thredbo that has in floor heating through the entire place , nice and cozy

Now that we have a beardie the oil heater stays on pretty much 24/7 through the colder months to keep the ambient temperature in the room up overnight and on colder days (he's got regular in-tank heating too). I don't especially mind because it means it's not as cold for us, either. ;)

A lot of places in the snow do, its really really good lol
yea there great but my favourite thing would have to be the heated towel racks , there the bomb when you get out of the shower :)

I have solar hot water at home. It is great for 9 months of the year. In winter all my hot water comes from electricity because the solar is crap. Your issue would be that you will get lots of heat in summer when you don't want it and none in winter when you need it. When I set up my herp room I insulated it so that it would never get above 30 degrees even if outside was 45 (and yes I have tested that). With enough enclosures the room will heat up anyway (again if insulated like mine was).

BTW Waterrat - I will be in Cairns next week (back at the Casino) - come visit!!! Its a tax conference this time so you might fall asleep.

a australian fire work company just outside of bathurst uses this method aswell, if they use other sources of heat it can make the fireworks egnite

That's strange it doesnt work in winter. Our solar water works all year round. I guess we get enough day light in Perth to heat it up? Only difference is in Summer the cold water is quite warm too.

How many solar panels would you need to run a few heat cords? just set them up and run them though a 12vdc to 240vac inverter and run them during the day and maybe a couple of deep cycles for the night running.

I've often thought about using the hotwater thing, but using 1/4" retic line hooked up to a pool solar heater they sell in clark rubber. But if it failed you'd know about it! there would be a lot of water going through the house!

This is something I have been thinking of for some time. I will definately be looking seriously at providing heat to my critters through solar heated water when i buy my own house.
Good thread, thanks

Is that because as a snake breeder tax is not a consideration?

Off topic, but....

It DID ignite a few years ago... felt the explosion over 20km away.

And that was just one of the many storage crates :?
