Hey guys,
Just wandering if its better to have a background in your tank or does it not matter?
Thanks :)

It's not really better. It just looks appealing to the eye and gives off a sort of realistic appearance to the habitat. You can also make shelves or outcrops on it so they have more surface area to move around and higher spots. So it can be good but not that important.

hey well i suppose that is up to you and your preference hay, try a different numvber of backgrounds and see which one best suites you, for me a backgropund would serve only as a deco, i have a number of tanks and dont have any backgrounds, so yeah like i said it all depends on your preference on how you want your tank to look.

yeah in agreeance with bananapeel, the perches and branches and stuff are more benificial to your creature rather then a background, the background creates a visual appeal for us.

Okay :) and is it cheaper to make your own? And if so how?

Check out the DIY thread, should be plenty of information there mate.

Usually it's cheaper. unless you find a cheap one online. the good thing about making your own is that you can make it to your needs and liking. You can get them custom made but they cost a bit. to make them you can either:
use expanding foam which you spray on. this you can them mould into the preferred shape. then use render if you want (optional) and paint. make sure the stuff isn't toxic.

or you can use styrofoam packaging stuff and carve it and sand it into a basic shape. then apply render, concrete and paint etc etc. whatever you want. there are a couple of threads in the DIY section.

hope this helped
