G'day guys, I'm wanting to get one of my jungles sexed. Don't know how old it is, but it's about 1.7m in length... I'm in Melbourne S.E. suburbs. Also what's it cost roughly? Thanks

Best way to sex cheaply is put it in cage with a male if they fight then its a boy if they make love and smoke afterwards its a girlie

Haha yeah and if neither of them occur? Hermaphrodite snakes? Hypothetically if I had them caged together the last six months and occurrence A or B didn't happen would I have sexless snakes?

Are you kidding me? That has to be the worst advice I've heard in a long time. So if your snake doesn't end up dead or injured it must be a female? Which one of you males want to have a cage match with me? We can fight to the death. Then well know for sure who's a male and who's a female. If you don't want to possibly end up with a dead or injured snake the best ways to sex is to pop there hemipenes or to probe them. There are a bunch of videos on YouTube that show you how to sex a snake. If you don't feel your able to do it, you can always go to a vet or at least ask a local herper for some help.

Agreed. It would be totally irresponsible to leave cigarettes in with the snakes... I'm sure lung cancer can affect them too

Is it common practice to sex snakes this way in Australia? I'm assuming not. Bottom line the best scenario that may arise from putting two males together is one will go off feed. I for one spend far to much time and money on my collection to just throw my reptiles together and hope they sort them selves out.

Edit: I must add this is a generalization, it's not always true as there are species that do benefit from competition but they are few and far In-between. Even then it still can be risky. Not worth it IMO.

It's not. Giving bad advice appears to be someones speciality though.

Hopefully some can answer with something helpful. I've never had a snake sexed so am interested too.

I'm hoping to learn how to probe from someone that has a lot of experience doing it.
Maybe you could ask an experienced keeper near you to teach you?

Ya I was really surprised when I read that. I was yelling at my screen "DON'T DO IT". I have probed only one snake and popped a few. So I do not feel I can properly explain how to do it sorry. Nothing beats hands on experience. Like others as well as myself have stated go to a local respected herper. I get my reptiles probed by a more experienced herper. Everyone before you make a decision with the info given to you by anyone on this site(myself included) wait for others to pipe up. Often we can't agree on something, that's husbandry for you. The best advice I can give you is wait for a general consensus before you make a hasty decision. Gather up all the info and adjust to suit your needs. That doesn't go for sexing. There is a right and wrong way, I'm just saying for husbandry issues while I'm on a rant.

Sexing can be done by popping or probing. You should pop them only if you know how. Usually done after first feed/shed.

I'd take it to a vet and have it probed

I didnt take that as advice. I took it more for what I think it was, as an attempt at humor... But if anyone can point me in the direction of someone that can help with sexing a snake it would be appreciated. Thanks

People lighten up, I would have thought the line about having a smoke afterwards would show its a joke. I personally would ask the snake in question if it preferred Holdens or Fords if it chose one it's a male if it replied neither they are both just cars its a girl.

Shane at Karingal Vets...I think its $45 for the first one and around $10 for every other one...im pretty sure he probes and does an ultrasound...

I wouldn't reccomend poping for a large snake (it's generally best done when they're fresh hatched). Probing is your best bet however not something you want to do yourself if you've never done it before a YouTube video won't help. Best to either see a vet or get someone who's done it plenty of times to help you out and maybe teach you. It's not very hard.

Its not very hard ,but easy to stuff up. ive had snakes people have injured from probing ,you have to have experience to interpret the results.
Had people probe snakes at the airport that ive sent that dont know the difference between a female and male.
Common thing is to see snakes with damage to the spine near the cloaca and then the little bumps on the tail where someone has been holding by pincing.
Theres allot of vets that i wouldnt trust probing snakes takes allot of experience and anyone can buy probes.

hahah some great answers there...particularly enjoyed the ford/holden scenario. In WA there are at least 3 breeders who will probe your snake if you call and ask them politely first for free- and some charge cash $50.
This is imprecise but you can often tell based on the tail- males have a slight bulge/curve after the cloaca and females taper off in a straight line.. or in a good shed, sometimes the male's hemipenes can be seen. Our carpet python had not shed with the hemipenes before until last week when they were clear as day- he is now 18 months old and i was convinced he was a girl! If you are desperate, I would be asking a breeder, who, in my opinion, would be probing much more often than a vetinarian unless they are an actual reptile specialist (the vets in perth near me are more commonly domestic pets that do offer reptile services etc, though it may be different over there) :) good luck! and make sure you tell us what sex it is :)

They would be in a normal marriage wouldn't they, and for all the Americans out there this is a joke just in case you thought we allowed snakes to get married in Aus

I've thrown male Antaresia together a few times to get them in the mood. Have a beautiful WC male Stimson's that wasn't interested in mating so threw it in with another male for 20 mins. After a quick scrap I separated them and both snakes locked up with their females within an hour and produced clutches. Not normally necessary but I think this (combined with freezing winter temps) got the job done.

Ring around your local vets. Chances are a male will be quite obvious at that size and probing it should remove most doubt. If it probes male its probably male, if it probes female it might be worth doing again down the track before buying a mate for it (if thats your intention).

Thanks guys, rang amazing amazon today and spoke to Vince. He said he'd do it for me for free provided they aren't stupidly busy... So I'll head down there Tuesday and see how we go... Not overly fussed as to what it is, although being a female would be handy as the other large jungle I have is a male. Which in turn would help with my first attempted breed project
