Hi all,

I think my smooth knob-tailed gecko has MBD of some sort as he's gone off his food for a few weeks now (I thought it was due to brumation until recently). He just sits in his hot end hide and thats about as active as he has been. I tried poking him the other night and his reactions were slow and unusual for a smooth knob-tailed. He tried to run away but couldn't as his back legs appear to be not working properly.
Anyways I was wondering if there is a decent reptile vet in the ACT region anyone can recommend?

Cheers,
Bill

MBD affects the bones not energy from what i have heard do desert dwelling geckos need uv lighting??

I hope your little gecko get's better soon, he looks really sad :(

Looks kinda wrinkly, could he be dehydrated?

He looks very sick. He is extremely dehydrated. How often do you spray him with water? I would concentrate on getting fluids into him and get him to a specialist vet. Don't try and feed him. I would drip 5% glucose/water solution onto his nose every hr or 2 until you get him to a vet.

As other said mist him,....he does look dehydrated,....they can go off their food but he's not right as you've noticed.

Try Sandy first.

Keep unstressed in a dark spot till you can get to Sandy.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone for your help I took him to Sandy a couple of days ago and he has been treated for a common protozoa infection but there's a good chance he has MBD. He was also given fluids injected into his stomach. He's on a syringe diet until he picks up his appetite. Hopefully he'll pull through this and take a turn for the better but only time will tell.

I will keep you guys updated.
Cheers,
Bill

glad to hear he is doing better, he looks so sick in those pics really pull my heart strings with geckos as they are so cute and small. keep us updated on how he goes.

go sandy at inner south vet. took my shingleback to him with a severe respiratory infection, trouble breathing, under weight and not eating. all good and eating again in two weeks :) going to take my woma to him to get micro chipped(I know it sounds stupid) when shes abit older. hope your gecko gets better

The poor little fella passed away overnight. RIP my little het for patternless gecko. He was 6 months and 18 days old. May you enjoy the rewards of gecko heaven

i will let you know if I get bub but it won't be till early next year if I do. My guys are 7 mounths old now and look fit . Soz for your loss. Keeping tips for next time and I hope you will get another . Keep them warm through out winter no need to cool much through winter dehrydration can be big issue in winter due to the relative humidity in the ambient are will suck moistuer out of there sand I spay mine daly and dig there sand and re wet it every week through June July and augest. There desart aminlas that love to burrow an if you been out i central aus in winter it's Dewey and sand is moist near the river banks were you find knobbys or so I was told.as for the mbd very rare in geckos but fast growing young gex can sucbome to it dusting crix with calcium will help but also try to limit feeding in young ones all so sunning them can be good for them to late arfter noon or early morning when the weather is still cool and humidity high. Or in semi shade. They have be known to be out hunting in these time with the sun still up say between 4 am and 7am and 7pm and 10pm in summer mounths there are meny will nature shots of them taken in the twilite hours . If you ever get more best of luck with them thay are some of my fave gex and very cool to have

Thanks for your information and advice. I have been breeding them for a few years quite well even in Melbourne climate but Canberra is even colder. I have 5 smooth knob-tailed atm and enjoy keeping them and N. amyae.
