Hey all,
why is that no one seems to have Rough Scaled Pythons. Is there something about them that makes them not a good python to keep? From what I've read they seem like great pets.

Plus they've got the added bonus of looking spectacular with those captivating eyes and that stunning head.

From,
YayPythons :D

I guess it might come down to no morphs, roughies all generally look the same.
I have one and he's a great little hatchy.

If i was to get another python i reckon i'd get a roughie. Stunning snakes imo.

I'm pretty sure their general rarity comes mostly from the fact that they are quite new in the hobby (compared to other species). Also they are kind of "boring" as far as a lot of keepers are concerned.

Note I said "a lot" not "all"

They're a brown boring snake....

Only snake connoisseurs keep them ;)

They are on the specialist list here in SA...if they were on basic I would most likely already have one! :D

They're vicious ugly mean snakes with huge killing teeth.

(Sarcasm)

I think the fact that, at least in NSW, they're also on a class 2 licence might come into play. Newer herp keepers can't rush out and buy one. I've never considered roughies boring, in fact the very first time I saw one I was completely captivated by it's huge blue-ish eyes. Gorgeous pythons.

EDIT - haha I just noticed the OP used the word captivating to describe the eyes, after making my post. It's so true, their eyes are just to die for.

I have 3 roughies and they are gorgeous snakes.

They have the best personalities, extremely placid and curious. I think they are extremely underrated and not a boring brown snake at all =P

Look, let me make clear that I think they're ripper snakes.

However, I have picked up the odd "boring" comment from keepers in the past. None have been able to explain to me what they mean by that.

I'm not sure... is it the lack of morphs and locality variations? The fact that there is (so far) no scope to produce candy cane pink and yellow roughies?

I'm curious about why they are perceived to be boring. Can anyone enlighten me?

I think what Sax meant was there's many keepers that think coastals and others snakes in their more natural forms are ugly and boring and are only interested in vibrant snakes.

I have a Roughie, absolutely gorgeous snake, and probably my favorite, very easy to handle, quite curious and everyone who visits wants to hold him. :p

We have thirteen python species and depending on your state, you can keep most (or none) of these. To me, the thing about RSP's is that they have so many points of difference to the other twelve species.

The keeled scales, the hatchling threat display, the forward facing eyes, the colour changes, the long strike and the wonderful backstory are just a few of these.

They dont have the striking appeal of say, an albino darwin or B&G jungle, but they are just a bit different (in some way i cant really define) to other carpets. I cant see my collection ever not having an RSP in it now ive got them. Hatchling RSP are great too - they are like a shoestring with a big boggly head on the end!
