It is actually Ramphotyphlops nigrescens, the Blackish Blind Snake. There are two other species that may occur in your area. R. weidii only gets to 30cm,is a more slender build and pinkish in colour. R. proximus attains the max length (75cm), has the same robust build and can have similar adults colour, grey cf dark purplish brown. However, the snout of proximus protrudes forward in the middle and it has a beak-like side profile, compared to nigrescens, which is rounded both ways.
Blind Snakes are totally harmless. They cannot even bite you. The worst they can do is push you with their small spine on the tail tip, which won’t even break the skin. They can release a musk type odour, very similar to turtles and about as equally ‘pleasant’.
