This snake had grabbed a possum in front of a German shepard. It appears that the possum was on the ground during the day for reasons unknown.
While watching dinner I noticed movement, the possum had a joey! A far to late attempt to rescue the joey caused the python to spit out its meal and have a few shots at me. After it successfully saw me off, it recommenced and finished its meal.

Mother nature can be a cruel thing. Did the Carpet end up eating the joey as well?

Judging by the bulge the carpet won't need to eat for quite some time. The possum looked huge.

The joey was alive when first noticed. I waited until I could get at it without disturbing the snake but a coil had gone around it. It was constricted against the mother and killed. I think it was just big enough to hand rear but someone should confirm or debunk this statement.
The joey was buried.

Do you have anymore information that may help to what size would be viable to try to hand rear.

I'm no expert but I think it has to actually have some fur on it for a person to be able to hand rear it, and even then they are pretty hard to hand rear (or so carers have told me).

Yeah thats true. The minimum age they need to have 'velvet' fur and even then its very difficult. At that age the mouth would not be fully formed so the trauma from being pulled from the mother would have, most likely, irreversibly damaged his mouth.
