Pet Shop V Breeder

I know that many are happy that reptiles can now be sold in pet shops here but as with other store bought pet, I can't help but wonder if perhaps this was a bad decision.

Not all stores will acquire their livestock from reputable breeders.

Are we going to see an influx of back yard breeders where the animals are used as breeding machines with zero quality of life

We've seen this happen with other pets.
Mongrel dogs sold as "designer" sold at ridiculously high prices, no history, no testing for genetic disorders, etc.

I just cannot see a positive side to pet stores selling reptiles.

Just wondering what other people's thoughts are ?

I believe that breeders are more reliable and usually even cheaper pet shops usually charge more for reptiles for example I have seen MD go for $600+ In a pet shop I saw somewhere. Also there are a lot of dealers at pet shops who don't care for the reptiles as much as they could be unlike they SOMETIMES do with dogs and cats. So I would not regret buying a snake from a pet shop unless I saw a problem instantly but I would try to stick to breeders.

Where were they bred earlier than six months ago, before shops were allowed to sell them? It's either in someones backyard pit or inside the house in a terrarium? As for quality of life, it's up to the private keeper to allow that. How many people actually offer enrichment to their reptiles in the first place?

I think a lot of people have to realise the few pet stores that are allowed to sell must jump through hoops to get this licence, must employ people with relevant experience in the industry, and to fall below the standards dictated by the NPWS, would be to have the trading licence they worked so hard to achieve, be removed from them. The trading licence is not easy to have granted, otherwise there would be more than five or six shops out of the hundreds of NSW petshops selling reptiles in store.

I bought my first snake, a little spotty, from a pet shop in Vic, but now moved to nsw. The shop I got her from were a specialist reptile and fish shop and the guys there were great. They continued to help me over the years, and all their animals are happy and well looked after. I continued to buy all my scaley pets from them for the fact I knew I was getting a healthy well looked after animal. So really it just depends on the pet shop...
