I had a look at the Bandy Bandys range and they arn't shown this far south. The tail also didn't look as stubby.
 
No it was alive, I didn't find it but was told it was on a concrete slab. I probably should have posted this in the id area.
 
It's Vermicella annulata, the Bandy bandy. They are found along the eastern seaboard including in the hunter valley
 
I just did a quick google and found that there have been quite a few Bandy Bandy sightings in Yengo National Park, which is I presume the Wollombi you are talking about.

What a nice looking snake
 
I just looked at a few more sites and some had a much larger distribution range than others and included Wollombi. Thanks for the help.
