Ah OK... that's weird. My responses were for Ellann's post. The other individual should have started his/her own thread.

I just thought I would let you all know that my girl didn't make it.

She passed away yesterday.

I'm absolutely heart broken.

I have put her in the freezer because I want to get an autopsy done to find out what happened.

Thank you for all your help and support and sorry for starting a thread that caused conflict between others.

Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately a necropsy will be impossible if you have frozen her, they need to be refrigerated only for this to be able to be performed.

Sorry that's what I meant. She is in the refrigerator at the moment.
Thank you though.

A sad truth of keeping pets is that they will die. Sucks when you lose one. Unfortunate that it got sick, and it will be interesting if they can determine the cause.

i think its disgusting that people are happy to just start arguing on someones thread when they are looking for help about their sick animal. People need to put their frigging epeens away and stop hijacking peoples threads. Its bad enough their animal was unwell, you don't have then start arguing about who has more experience. To the OP, I'm so sorry about your girl, its once of the hardest things to go through. Don't be sorry about this thread causing an argument. They should be sorry to you for being negative at a time you don't need it. I hope they can find out what cause her to deteriorate so fast.

To the others, if you want to argue like a twat - make your own thread and do it there.

I don't think anyone was arguing about who has more experience. The discussion was about what advice to follow and why. It's imperative when treating a sick animal to get the best available advice. That wont always be covered by a vet, as most vets will tell you they don't cover much about reptiles during their degree.

Pythoninfinite has been involved with the care of native animals and reptiles far longer than I have been alive and I'm 37. He comes from a science background and worked at the WA museum for quite sometime. That's not an argument it's just fact.

I don't think you being on your soap box condemning everyone is any better than the rest who have brought a negative vibe to this thread? Everyone is passionate about the well being of reptiles. That is what unites us.

I think it was post#13 when there was mention of much more sinister symptoms that I indicated the vet to be the way to go. I was just confused when another member moved in and started discussing another snake and became a bit "attitudinal." I too am sorry to hear about the demise of this snake, and would very much like to know if a PM discovers anything.

Hi guys, wanted to ask how long a pm normally takes. I rang the vet today and they said the results were still in process?

Hi Ellannn, if there was pathology work to be done as well as visual examination, the samples would be sent off to a lab for diagnostic work - could take a few days to a week or more.

Jamie

The pm results have come back.
Cause of death was some thing called "inclusion body disease"

I will have to do some research on it because I am very unfamiliar with this disease.

I don't even know how or why she got it.
Should I be worried about my other animals getting it??

I'm still so so sad, and I feel incredibly guilty about not being able to take her to the vet the day before, it actually makes me sick to the stomach. but the vet has said that there wouldn't have been anything else that we could have done.

Thank you for all your support and kind words.

I'm sorry for your loss Ellannn.

IBD would explain the rapid degeneration, loss of motor function and RI.

Was your little jungle in quarantine? As IBD is a virus, there is the chance of passing it on to other pythons. As far as I know there is no cure. There is nothing you could have done, try not to feel guilty about it.

Out of curiousity have any of your animals ever had mites? I remember reading somewhere that there was a chance mite could play apart in the transmission of IBD. I'll see if I can find a link for you.

I'm so sorry Ellannn

At the risk of sounding heartless, is is probably the best outcome. At least you know that there's nothing you did (husbandry related, etc) that contributed to the passing of your beloved python.

Sending really big hugs and hope you find a special way to remember her.

Here is an explanation of what IBD is and what it does to your snake. Very sad to loose a snake like this, but take at least some comfort in knowing that it was not a result of anything you had done.

Inclusion Body Disease

Sorry for your loss Ellannn . Wow , IBD is certainly very rare in Australia. This is very interesting indeed.

IBD is uncommon hr from wht I'v gleaned in discussions with specialist vets & others here, but because OPMV and other viral diseases also have inclusion bodies in cells as part of the diagnosis, they can sometimes all be wrapped up in the same parcel.

The biggest concern is that this is highly contagious to other snakes, and invariably fatal once symptoms show, so exceptional quarantine measures need to be taken before introducing any more snakes into the area. The re-use of that enclosure would need to be carefully considered in the future, although I believe the virus life outside the snake is limited to days or weeks.
