I have fake grass in one of my enclosures but thinking of change it back out for aspen.
Even with regular cleans and and washing still seems to hold the smell.

I use the outdoor carpet not the fake grass also buy the one without the rubber backing that way when it gets hot if you use a heat cord it does not give of fumes. If you soak it in disinfectant for awhile after rinsing the crap of then put in the washing machine you should not end up with a bad smell. What they sell at bunnings is the same stuff as they sell in pet shops but about a fifth of the price is the only difference I can find.

Thanks, so is that the marine carpet you are referring to? Would it be better to various small pieces (like square tiles) cut to size so when its time to clean the crap off it, you can just take out the dirty one

If its just a small tile, is it ok to just put it through a hotwash in the washing machine and not use any disinfectant, surely that is enough to clean the piece of carpet

I use outdoor carpet from Bunnings is easy to clean and reuse.
I know of people using coir peat, wood chips, paper, kitty litter.

I would steer clear of kitty litter as most on the market expand once they get moist or wet and if injested can kill

Lots of people will have their favorite substrate, mine is newspaper because I'm practical and cheap, lol. Plus my enclosure is basic.

If you've got a display enclosure, I'd go for the coir peat stuff, you can then just take out the wet/dirty stuff and replace it, or Kritters crumble (safe for reptiles, Petstock has it) , so same deal, youre' only taking out the stuff that is wet/dirty.

Marine carpet would be okay, but if you've got lots of decorations on the floor of your enclosure, then you're having to move a whole lot of stuff to get it out, wash and replace.

Thanks for that

I will have a look. Thats why I thought if the marine carpet was cut into smaller pieces and cut to fit in like a jigsaw puzzle, then you just remove the small piece to be cleaned
