I remember a corn snake was found at bunnings in Kalgoorlie. it was put down. i don't know why it couldn't have gone to a zoo or reptile park. W.A. seems to be a lot stricter than the east coast.

Like I said, I do appreciate everyone's advice. I'll do whatever I have to with the licensing thing, but for now I want to keep the snakes healthy and happy, that's the advice I'm after.

I understand that but you need to realise that if you don't resolve your licensing issues now you will always have this problem. (Potentially leading to any legally owned animals also being confiscated down the track)
Lets say you just keep them and get a licence and do everything by the book in the future. In 5 years time you get a visit and they find you have 6 snakes when your licence says you have 4........see where this is going?

Like or loath licensing its the law and if you don't follow these laws then potentially more, (legally owned), animals will suffer.
Folks on here are only giving you advice and its for a very good reason. The longer you wait to talk to the licensing people the worse the situation looks. You are not the 1st person to get caught out while trying to do the right thing and I doubt you will be the last.

Zoos can get all the Corn Snakes they need from other zoos when they breed them (which they do only when there is a need for them). All exotic reptiles found illegally in Australia are euthanased, in every state. The risk of transmitting disease into collections is too high.

Sounds to me like the person who passed these snakes on to you wasn't licensed either, so without knowing the provenance of those animals, you would need to be very careful of their health status for at least the next 12 months if they remain in your care. I'm guessing that you know nothing of the dangers of the 4 or 5 always fatal snake viruses that occur in Australia, which may remain unnoticed in infected and infectious snakes for up to 3 or more years?

I'm hearing you. I'm gonna call them as soon as I knock off work and sort it out. Hopefully it's not too late.

What state did you say you were in? NSW? Call them explain the situation.(truth always prevails) and like has been mentioned who knows the the bureos[emoji26]...
Good luck with being able to hold onto them..and sort the hides water and climbing gear in the enclourses.. also I personally would recommend losing the fake grass. I bet it stinks [emoji6]..

I know my fake grass stank up in no time when I had it in one enclosure a couple of years ago, got rid of it and went back to good old newspaper lol.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see if the Licencing goes through, please keep us updated Murko. (I stuffed up a few years back when I moved from Vic to SA, I got an export permit, but didn't realise I needed an import permit...I rang them straight away once I realised my error, and then found out I'd stuffed up with something else as well. I narrowly avoided a fine, but got a warning letter, they are much stricter on Specialist permits than in Vic)

Yeah I went and bought them both a hide today and some timber to put as a threshold kinda thing across the front of the enclosure so I can put some proper bark Bedding in there for them.

And as far as the license thing goes, I called up today and the lady told me unless the previous owner had a license there's no hope of getting them put on mine as there's no way of knowing where they came from, but I'll keep trying until I get a soft one hopefully.

As you currently have illegal animals, you cannot legally obtain a license. On applying for a license you agree to not already have any illegal animals- including yours.

Your best bet is to explain your situation to your local reptile club (not sure where you are, but Hawkesbury Herp Society or Central Coast Herp Society are both in NSW). Surrender the animals to them, legally obtain your license, and adopt the animals back from the society (I know CC has only a $50 adoption fee for any animals they rehome)

You should also contact the seller for his reptile license number, and if he doesn’t have one, then report him :)

1) for being dodgy
2) failing to follow the animal welfare act

I've become quite attached to them so hopefully I don't have to surrender them. If I do have to surrender them though does that mean they will be sold to someone else or are they euthanised or what's the process there?
usually if a reptiles origin can't be proven it might be offered up in a ballot by the NPWS,I have been the lucky recipient of a Coastal Python in a ballot. She has proven to be a lovely placid creature.Normally they are only euthanised if an exotic or unhealthy creature.
You need to be a licensed keeper to be offered a chance in a ballot

How would I go about getting ny pythons back if I did surrender them? Is it even possible?
[doublepost=1523276327,1523276032][/doublepost]Also would like to let everyone know I got my self a license.
[doublepost=1523333385][/doublepost]So after contacting the licensing place today I've been told that I can't add the two snakes I've got to my license without the license details of the guy I got them off, which he doesn't have. So the only thing I can do now I guess is surrender them and hope to God they go to a good home :'(

Thanks to everyone who shared their knowledge, and to those who steered me in the right direction. Gutted how things turned out but I'll know better than to take snakes off unlicensed sellers next time I suppose, lesson learned..

Hopefully I'll be able to get back on here in the future and share a bit about any new critters I buy, the right way this time.

It's a shame you couldn't keep them, but you absolutely did the right thing, so in future you will be able to buy them legally.

Can you surrender them to the club that someone else on here recommended?
I hope you report the seller, he illegally sold (and kept) reptiles if he had no license.

The good thing is you can now read up, research and ask more questions, so you will be armed with knowledge once you are ready for a new critter.

Now you can get a python that you know what it is and do research on that species!

I hope you reported the seller aswell.

it might hurt a bit now, but when you see what animals are available and choose one (or more) that really catches your eye, you'll know you made the right choice.

Couldn't you just buy them back when they're put up for adoption?

I don’t think they will go up for adoption since seller has no license and no history of where they came from :/

Ah ok, I thought they might go up on the RSPCA site or something.

That's exactly right. If they're found to be aggressive or for any other reason not fit to be kept, or if they believe they were taken from the wild, they will be put to sleep or released back into the wild after they've been checked over, but as I've handled them and know they're not "exotic" they will be given to a wildlife carer who will either keep them or release them, as far as I was told anyway.

Who told you they would release them Murko? Just seems to be strange advice. Darwin pythons come from Darwin area, so releasing it in NSW, Vic or SA seems wrong (to me).

Can anyone with experience on unlicensed snakes & what potentially happens to them elaborate on this?

They get PTS if they can’t find where they come from. In this case the seller didbt have a license so the origins are unknown whether wild caught or captive bred or what
