Hi all , we are looking for individuals to participate in a research
initiative in the Amazonian rainforests in deepest, darkest Peru!! There
will be three science co-ordinators, and they will be supported by a team of
International and Peruvian Volunteers. We are having no problems finding
volunteers for the Mammal and bird teams but have had limited interest to
date in the places on the Herpetology teams. Please could you circulate
this mail to your members, or include an article in your next
newsletter/put some info on your website. I have also attached a poster,
and would really appreciate it if you could put this on display in any
locations you may feel are appropriate - many thanks for your help.

Fauna Forever is a research initiative of the Tambopata Reserve Society
(TReeS, UK Registered Charity No. 298054) that aims to determine the effect
of tourism on mammals, reptiles, frogs and birds at 5 lodges in the
Tambopata Area of Madre de Dios, Peru.

Over the 1-year duration of the project, the Project Fauna Forever research
team will require the assistance of 24 volunteers to contribute their time
and energy towards a challenging initiative that aims to improve the way man
uses the rainforest and its natural resources.

The project is broken into four 3-month phases:

7 February 2004 - 28 April 2004
12 May 2004 - 1 August 2004
15 August 2004 - 4 November 2004
18 November 2004 - 7 February 2005

International volunteer assistants will be required to cover the costs of
their participation, 3 free places per phase will be given to Peruvian
students of Biology from local Universities in Cusco and Puerto Maldonado.
Additional information about the project can be found on our site
www.faunaforever.com

Alternatively if you require further details, please do not hesitate to get
in touch. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards
Karen Tailby

damn, bet it would cost a small fortune if you have to pay for yourself etc, but bloody hell your right about it being the opportunity of a lifetime, it would be an awsome experience

That would be cool, pity i don't have $6000 talk about once in a lifetime stuff.

$6000 !!!! Doh! had my bags packed and all! bugger.

I was seriously thinking about it. Then I realised that the $3300 US doesn't cover airfares or any of the equipment that you need for the trip. :(

Maybe we could pass the hat around and send Brodie or Jeremy on it?

You gotta be over 18, it would be a very pricey trip once everything was taken into account, i was thinking i could sell some snakes. umm NO WAY!

Anyone here got a rich family member? :)

i actually applied on a whim, and have been accepted...lol

gotta pay $460 deposit, and they sent an email saying i`ll receive a pack in the mail (will post it in here when it arrives) but they have sent me about 6 emails allready with ideas, and help regarding fund raising, and how easy it has been for people in the past....

so, who's gonna give me some money...come on ya stingey buggers :p

cheers
STP

ps: also sent another email to em asking for credentials etc to make sure it isnt a con!!!!!

I'm seriously considering this. I haven't much here and galavanting around the world was the best thing I've ever done. Why not go back. I can already order beer in spanish, what else do I need to go to Peru?

lol, erm about $6000, but god damn i dont care about spendin the money (providing i can find the money) reckon it would be a mind blowing experience

Hey Steve, are you still going? I've been accepted and I'm going during the May project. I can't wait. I'll probably do a bit of touring after too. Inca trail, Machu Pichu, that whole chestnut

arrrg

arrg, i have the money and no restrictions (uni etc), just turning 18 too!

it'd be awesome... but the money dammit

stp can u send me some info about fundraising etc, itd be much appreciated :)

cheers, jono

Hi,
I to am seriously thinking about going as I have nothing holding me back except for the money problem. Had a look at their site and some thing caught my attention, they say that you should bring a Snake bite Extractor. What the hell is that? Seems like it wiould be a hell of a lot of fun just wish I had the money. Wantin gto apply just to see if I have a chance of getting in but just wondering if you have any obligations after you apply?

Depending on how many other people from here want to go we should try and organise a big fundraiser.

yeah good idea, only obligation is a deposit of $465 i think it is....i forget and it has to be paid like yesterday...lol

buggered if i know what a snake bite extractor is,

I must say that this trip doesn't sound very safe if they azre telling you to bring a snake bite extractor! It sounds like contraption to remove venom once you have been bitten by a snake. I dont like the sound of that ;)

hey ppl, i did a search on snake bite extractor and this is wat i found-
PRODUCT NAME: Snake Bite Extractor Kit.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: Kit which comes with the needed equipment
for quick removal of snake venom. Great to bring afield while
hiking, camping or hunting. Each kit comes with four applicator
cups, safety razor, alcohol pads, sting care pads, the Complete
Bite Book and it's own carrying case. The Extractor Pump is able
to produce 750 millibars of suction which enables you to remove
significant amounts of venom from snakebites.

PACKAGING AND COST: Each kit is $15.00 plus shipping.

i didnt think ya could extract snake venom?

They sell these kits on the US site www.tongs.com
Heres the link http://www.tongs.com/shop/index.php?GrID=49

It is not recommended nowadays by most Doc's etc... to use a venom extraction kit, as it risks you losing the venom on the skin, which is generally needed to identify the snake that bit you if you didn't know for sure.
Best to just apply the pressure bandage method.
I surpose that they are just being overly cautious, as they will have people out in the jungle in remote locations, and it might not be possible to get someone to adequete medical attention as quickly as they would like, you will probably find that their insurance company has insisted on everyone carrying one.
