There have been a couple of arguments aobut my snake...And I dont want to start another one. I was told it was an intergrade when I purchased it, and when displayed a pic on APS was told it was a coastal. He has shed about a month ago and I think looks like a jungle...I'll get a picture posted asap, but is this normal?

Ok, here he is

It's either a intergrade or a hybrid, the breeder would be pretty hopeless if he didn't know what he was breeding.
Why would he sell a jungle off as an intergrade when he could get alot more money for a jungle.

It ain't no jungle.

Ok...I'm not sure but most of the info I say on this site I was told by the breeder which happened to be far from the truth so I am not really sure anymore.

:p It is possible that the intergrade/hybrid could be a coastal x jungle & that might be why you think this belle~belinda. :p

.

hopefully i'll be getting a coastal x atherton jungle in a few months

ill tell u if its similar

the patterns are similar to the coastal, but like no one said if the breeder didnt know what he was breeding well?????? what is it on your licence as???? but if i have to agree with the others maybe its a coastal x jungle..... and for your aching head take a couple of panadole and have a lay down.... you will feel better soon

plain old coastal gust bright colours cause it has just shed if ya wanna be sure y dont you get a scale count

it depends hybrids can be all types.eg
Carpet x diamond
coastal x jungle
bredli x coastal
carpet x waters
carpet x scrubbies
It doesnt look much like the intergrades I have seen, more like a far north Qlds, if anything it would resemble a coastal x mosman carpet, but the guy you got it from should know...well you would think anyway

Whats a scale count?

You literally count the scales on the snake. It's another way to identify species. Each species will have a certain number of scales. It takes forever to these counts. Total pain in the a$$. Your carpet look more like a jungle than mine does.

does it really matter what type of snake it is. dont worry about what its scientific name or what type of hybrid it is just enjoy it!

It looks a little like one of my Darwin Carpets when they were small, which bothers me, might not have Darwins, hehe

Would scale counts work between different sub-species? And what are the expected count for each sub species? If you are going to do a scale count do it on a shed skin pined to a board. Count arount the mid body of the skin from belly scale to belly scale an count along the diagonal.
Here is a diagram which I hope shows how to count scales. count along the Xes.

And you have a cute little snake there but I am not game to venture an opinion as to which sub-species it is ( its not a water python or a olive python, if that helps :) ). I think you will need to wait until the snake is much older.

This is why IMO all hybrids should be culled.
It is too easy for newbies to purchase and breed from them due to their cheap market value. We then have a hobby that is continually questioning what the species is.Not to mention how many more times the hybrids will be bred polluting the hobby, and how many times keepers will try to sell them as pures, leading to even more confusion in the hobby and even more misfortuned cross breeding.

JMO no need to take offence.
