Nice work Dave. I've just filed that one away. Hatchling antaresia give me grief, but so far with older stimo's spur location is a dead set give away.

I would love to see the information where this method was tested?

Another method is the miniature plumbline, or pendulum, which is held above the bird to be sexed. If it develops a circular swing, it is a female, if a long pendulous arc, it is a male. Many variations on this theme occur and are probably as accurate as a guess.

A less known method is dowsing. By means of a pendulum (a thread attached to an object) one dowsed for the bird?s sex. A rotating movement indicated that the bird was a female, a straight movement indicated that is was a male. But many people have strong doubts about this method?s reliability.

pendulum sexing (the fraudulent claim that by dangling some concocted item over the bird one can accurately sex it.)

This "method" of sexing cockatiels is called the pendulum method. It is not accurate, it is an old wive's tale, and pretty much the same as guessing.

There is probably room for a good scientific study or two but my guess is that some journals would hesitate at publishing such a paper regardless of the conclusions drawn. Perhaps we could get it past the editors of Monitor?
