Ooohh ooohh ooohh, They have been my favourite monitor since I began looking through reptile books when I was a youngin!!! I had the pleasure of holding one in a pet store in southern California in the early 90's!!! They are a bit finicky, but aparently adapt to captivity well!! It is a pity they are taken from the wilds of PNG and surrounds and exported to Europe in large numbers, often smuggled illegaly!!

I'm into setting goals and achieving them Dorian, I'll take that care sheet thanks mate. I am even working out how to build a tropical indoor enclosure that is 3m liong, 1m wide and 2.7 metres high with a natural ground floor. I'll just extend the house and leave out part of the slab so I can get access to ground and then grow cool plants.

Oh, another question, could these things live with GTP's?? Or would they both eat each other?

Geographically the are probably not found in Australia. Technically, they are because we claim several islands very close to PNG. I doubt that there are any in private hands here. At least not legally.

There are some in captivity mostly in Europe as I understand it.

I am pretty certain they are not on the Victorian schedules. Can they be kept in NSW??

It is a shame that they are so rare in captivity in Australia. In lots of ways they would seem to make them nteresting herpetoculture specimens:

They are a medium sized monitor (not to big).
The are aboreal which always helps when it comes to designing interesting enclosures.
They have all the visual appeal of GTP's with the added bonus that they actually move around.
They have a prehensile tail. (There is something quite amazing about prehensile tails ;-) )

Actually the site http://www.treemonitors.com has lots of interesting information and is basically dedicated to this species and its relatives. Currently it has a few dead links but I was chatting with the web master (Bob) via email and he explained that the site is stil lunder construction.

I have been asking around and nobody I know of can recall of them ever being legally held.

Does anybody know of anybody ever having kept them?

I cannot recall if there were any on that listing that Jeff sends out showing the NSW returns but I suspect that means they are not on there.

Is it possible that there are none legally held in Australia? If this is true, and given that they are only found in remote parts of Queensland we may never see them available to herpetoculture in Australia which woudl be sad.

This was the last time they were discussed on APS - They are definitely available in Europe.

yep Trader, none on the list in NSW at all. If there's any here, they're exotics. Maybe we need an amnesty on them???
