but the thing is, the come in contact with animals from all different souces, you dont know whats going round

when the shop buys form a reputable place or one particular place they do. Especially if they breed there own animals. If it was my pet shop the only time a customer would touch a reptile is if they had already paid for it, so you don't have any outside tranfer from customers.

i'm not saying all are bad but some just dont care, like my local pet stores that sell herps

there is good pet shops such as pails for scales.

you must be joking? last snake i had freighted to me by pails was heavily infested with MITES, i will never deal with that fool again.
cheers Matt

Yeha I do agree with you some stores are horrible but some are great. I think it comes down to what the store wants. I would prefer to have astore that gave the right advice and kept there animals in great conditions and it might cost youa little more but you know the animal is safe happy and healthy, plus the customers would feel a lot better buying a well kept animal.

Cheers

petshops arnt allowed to breed there own reps

Again on the EPA, EPA says yes they can.

i dont see why they cant, my local pet store does and what is stopping the owner of the petshop "selling" his reps to his shop?

The holder of a commercial reptile license cannot also hold a recreational reptile license, They have to be bred on premises under the one licence.

Cheers

last time we got an inspection from the epa which was last week my manager tony asked if we could breed them in the shop and they said no but you can put them onto one of the staff or managers lic and breed them at home but cannot breed them on the petstores premisis

I cant believe the EPA has told different ppl different things   next thing someone will say some pet shops will tell you you need heaps of expensive stuff to keep a snake and you dont really need it

I took one of my poor quality macs into a pet shop and it allowed me to rescue some fish from their diseased death camp without paying the regular ransom.

On a serious note its hardly clear cut at all, most petshops are simply dodgy in the way they rip ppl off and poorly look after there animals, but some are also good IMO and it also depends on the staff member you talk too as well.

I got a beardy from Just Reptiles and i thought that shop was better than about half the private keepers i have got reptiles from. It was about $10 over priced IMO but it came with a free vet check(that i didnt need because it was healthy) and being able to just walk in and buy it was easier than arranging to meet someone in a car park somewhere.

If you live in an isolated area where there aren't many breeders (like the NT) the pet shop may be the only place to get a reptile that you can see before you buy.

It depends on the shop. I got my diamond from a pet shop (pails for scales) and can't speak highly enough of them! The shop is very clean and they are well priced and offered heaps of advice. I still call them for advice over a year after purchasing him.
You should just shop around. For me, i didn't know this site existed until after i got Jake and didn't really know any breeders out there. Next time i buy another snake i will be going back to pails for scales.

It is just as cris said some shops are good some shops are bad. Some breeders are good some breeders are bad. Hopefully if we keep focusing on the good ones then the bad ones will have to eventually either a. Change there ways. b. Close or stop keeping retiles. This goes for shops and breeders.

Cheers

Sadly, bad shops typically sell more and make more money, because most bleeding hearts don't understand that by "saving the neglected or sick animals in the shop" they are funding poaching and torture, which causes it to happen more and more, while sending the good (or at least better) guys out of business, further increasing the incidence of poaching, torture, etc.

Some breeders are better than others, some shops are better than others, but shops have inherent problems which are simply impossible to avoid (increased costs, parasite and disease transfer, extra moves, the public harassing the animals, the breaking of the link between the breeder's knowledge and the new keeper, etc etc), as well as the increased ease of poaching, and all of the others.... then of course there are the horrors of what goes on when the inevitable neglect and poaching start up!

I have a great dislike for my local petshops that sells reptiles, ive seen at one store some very sick Central Netted Dragons, with massive nose rub damage, still for sale? ***!

good point. one of the worst shops ive seen was in springvale.

pet shops in and around brisbane suck there all 2 pricey there was a petshop in ipswich and there wer flies in the spotted pythons enclosure so to me pet shops are only good for goldfish but i have to say just reptiles in ipswich realy look after their snakes i probly would buy of them

petshops arnt even good for fish, how many time have i seen dead fish rotting in a tank or being eaten by other fish, to many times i tell ya, they are some great aquarium stores tho but they are the ones that concentrate on fish

I agree with hornet, i would only get fish from an aquarium that specialises in fish. And like others have said in the way of reptiles there are some good breeders and some bad breeders just like how there are some good pet shops and some bad pet shops. Just shop around.

On a slightly different note: I would NEVER buy a cat from a pet shop. It is far more rewarding to rescue a cat from a car park where they have been dumped, are gonna keep breeding etc. I wish that pet shops could only sell desexed cats and dogs, that would stop people dumping them and then letting them breed like crazy.
