Wierd question.Ive always loved pigs and I am quite keen to get one. However I want to get a piglet from a slaughterhouse and 'save'it from a horrible life and premature death. Just wondering if anyone on here works at a meatworks and knows the rules etc for this. I would obviously pay money. I also have plenty of room(16 acres)and yes, I am a vego.

I wouldn't think meat pigs would be the best breed as a pet.

Sounds like a wonderful idea to me, but i dont know anything about pigs or types....
I would say though that a slaughterhouse may be able to put you in touch with a breeder one would think

no Im serious. Pigs are more intelligent than dogs and when handreared make great pets, not at all agressive. Id get a sow and have it desexed.Remember Doris from A country practice?lol.

Smelly things, thats my input. Although with that much land xander it could work quite well.

They are very clean animals. There is a lot of misconceptions about them. Im trying to convince my husband.haha.

I think "your kidding" refers to asking a slaughterhouse for a pig.

I have dealed with a few and let me tell you their not clean, not to mention their distinct smell. lol. But with that much land i dont think they would be a problem.

Good luck getting one from a slaughter house, why not try a breeder/ Mate had a what was ment to be a pot belly, but just kept growing got well over 100kg, was freindly as but ruined his house as he kept it inside [don't ask?], it rooted all the tiles up in bathroom, chewed the cushions off the lounge, ate everything within reach [incuding dirty tissues from the bin] and squealed constantly if he wasn't giving it 'enough' attention or food. Yeah they are smarter than dogs [can be taught something like 40 tricks as opposed to 30 odd for a dog] but that makes them more of a handfull cause with intelligence comes puzzle solving abilityso they are great at things like escape, finding food that's not theirs and generlly getting into mischief. He ended up having to give it away as it got to big.

they stink something chronic, not aprob 4 u as u have the land. but they had one at my local pet shop and the whole building stunk and i mean the smell that strips paint kind of smell!! but good luck hope it works out!

Pigs are clean and they are very intelligent. Of course they are going to stink if they live in a filthy pig pen on a meat farm. But I think as a pet, you'd want one of those little potbelly pigs. The kind of pig you would get from a slaughterhouse would grow to be an absolute monster. Not to mention, it would eat you out of house and home.

They eat people you know? I knew this guy who worked at a pig farm for two years. One day a guy tripped whilst in the pig pen, hit his head and was unconscious. Fellow workers found him dead, being consumed by the pigs.

Good on you Xander, that's a really nice thing you're doing:DIf it was up to me I'd be rescuing a few of those poor battery hens, but my mum would never allow it:(Lots of people say those "meat pigs" aren't the best as pets, but animals that have gone through such hell as those being grown up for slaughter can become the gentlest of animals. I say go ahead and rescue one (although I think they're social creatures?? So maybe you'd want to rescue two;)), you'll have a best friend for life. And even if it doesn't turn out to be the kind of pig that loves to sleep on your lap, at least you'll have a pig that'll be grateful to you for saving it from living a life in tiny, cramped pens and only ever seeing sunlight while taking a trip to the slaughterhouse.

Michelle.

P.S I'm a vego too;)

:shock:...that's kinda gross lol. They must of been pretty hungry.

EDIT: I'm not sure if all pig farms/slaughter houses have it but from what I've seen and heard, if you look around you should find a bin full of dead pigs. Sometimes alive and conscious pigs have been rescued from such bins. If they don't allow you to buy one of their piglets it could be worth a shot, I know it's not pleasant though.

Pigs are great for pets. Try and ring a couple of slaughter houses see what they say. A mate had a pot belly didnt stink and enjoyed a 'shower' under the hose washed with dog shampoo,
Good luck!

Ben

Thats because they are driven mad from being kept in tiny pens with no room to move or roll or socialise. I bet you would do that too horsey if you were kept in conditions like they are(maybe not eat a person but I reckon youd go mad)I have a stable that has a yard and is well made with wooden poles. It is away from the house and I have no close neighbours.Geez cant anyone remember Doris from A country practice. It was more well behaved than that nasty little wombat.(ps I love wombats, but fatso did bite people all the time)

No these pigs had food around the clock and plenty of space. They just eat anything.

I highly doubt a slaughter house is going to hand you over a pig that is raised to be killed and eaten.

Would not be the best pet. A good mate of mine caught a wild one in the scrub (very small piglett) and hand raised it. It grew to be a 140kg sow. It bonded so well to Tony that when fluffy (her name) came on heat she would track Tony down and try to mate with him. This got very dangerous for Tony's wife and small daughters. She also used to bite and trust me a big pig has a very powerful bite. Don't think you will be doing the pig any favours by "saving it" the type of pig your after will not have any social skills and may develop into a very big problem. BUT on the other hand if you want to do it, go for your life, just think however if it does become to much for you how will you get rid of it? and to whom? Not many people will want a pet pig that is a handfull. The only people willing to take it would be someone who wants to turn it into pork chops......hmmmm pork chops......
