Is the use of latin names in posts always necessary?

I am not that versed in what I assume are Latin names for snakes and lizards and after reading replies to some posts over the last few years I felt it would be a good question. Why do some people tend to use Latin names when replying to posts that have been using common names, eg: rattling off 8...

    Colubrid prices and availability?

I'm hoping to get a little GTS or 2 this season but i'd love to get some other species in the future like bockadams, macleays water snake, slatey greys, keel backs and brown tree's. Does anyone know what i'd expect to pay for these and where would be the best place to look?

    Identify Snake?

Can anyone help identify this snake? It was found dead - presumably killed by the family dog. At first we thought it was a Slaty Grey, but the anal scales are divided? Located in the rural area of Darwin NT. The photos aren't great, but that's all I've got at this stage. Thanks for any assistance.
