Looks like one of the Northern species of mangrove snakes to me but I have no experience in the matter.

I thought that by the shape of the head but the colouring and the texture of the scales looks wrong

thanks saximus, a mate found this snake while he was up norhtern australia i think northern teritory i will find out for sure and post though

Looks very much like a Darwin Mangrove snake (myron richardsonii). Where was the snake found?

I think Myron richardsonii is the prime suspect.
