Hey everyone, I'm seeking some information from long term python breeders.
I've had a few unusual eggs being laid fairly early in gestation. They're very soft and squishy, and yes, it's somewhat of a guilty pleasure poking them.
This regards south-west carpet pythons (Morelia imbricata).
The mating occurred with a large female and a small male, it was his first time. Although last season he was showing interest in the females, however, I never allowed him to have his way with the girls. I only observed copulation once, but they were hooked up for roughly two and a half hours. First, the female carpet python laid a large, deformed, squishy egg 16 days post ovulation. Then she began her prelay shed 17 days post ovulation. Now it's roughly 21 days post ovulation and she's laid another egg. It's a better shape, but still squishy.
Can anyone provide insight into this? What's happening, and is there relatively no hope for a viable clutch? She doesn't look particularly big either.
