Subject: Reptiles free by ballot

A number of reptiles that were recently seized by Australian Customs
that cannot be returned to the wild are available from the NSW
Depatment of Environment and Conservation (NPWS) for allocation to
NSW licensed reptile keepers. There are very strict time constraints
that must be adhered to. If you are a NSW licensed Reptile Keeper
you can express your interest in acquiring one or more of these
animals by contacting Wildlife Licensing Section in writing by fax to
9585 6401 or email to wildlife.licensing@n... no later
than 12 noon Thursday 18 December 2003. There is no cost.

A ballot will be conducted between 1pm and 2pm Thursday 18 December
to allocate the reptiles. Applicants must be contactable by phone
between 2pm and 5pm on Thursday and must pick up any animals that
might be allocated to them, between 2pm and 5pm on Friday 19 December
from the DEC Hurstville office. If you can't meet those criteria and
the pick-up schedule please don't bother applying.

If you bid for any of the geckoes there will initially be a limit of
two animals of the same species per applicant. If you are prepared
to take more than 2 in the event that there are few expressions of
interest, please indicate so in your application. The animals that
are available are:
1 Egernia cunninghami Cunningham's Skink
1 Furina diadema Red-naped Snake
1 Simoselaps australis Eastern Shovel-nosed / Coral Snake
1 Diplodactylus vittatus Eastern Stone / Wood Gecko
1 Gehyra dubia Dubious / Macleay's Dtella
12 Oedura tryoni Southern Spotted Velvet Gecko
20 Oedura lesueurii Lesueurs Velvet Gecko
3 Underwoodisaurus sphyrurus Border Thick-tailed Gecko
(Note: U. sphyrurus is a Class 2 species and will be available only
to Class 2 licence holders.)

Without being too cynical, how much of a fair shot at this do you think the general public will have. Some internal manourvering or mates rates?

Rina,
NPWS have done this several times.
12 months ago they gave away blueys & water dragons etc.A few members from this site had picked a few up so I'd say there is a good chance you may get some if you apply...

Rina, given there are only a handful of herps avail and a hell of alot of public, i dont see how much fairer they can be than announcing it publically, if only on a herp site. no point in a full page ad in the herald is there!

I think that chance is fair. Our member did get 2 animals last time they did the same think.
If I would be interested in lizards, I would apply.

There is two snakes there Slatey...I myself have applied...Cant turn down a herp :D

Not the snakes I want bel. I do not like to feed skings and looks like that will be case here. I am in Pythons only.

I wish I wish i was not in this tish,
It seems the free scales are in NSW
I'm stuck here in QLD
And that makes me wail
"Boy how i wish they would send them by mail".

I love the look of those Simoselaps australis(Coral snake)
Can they be kept on a standard licence?

Also for those confused on the word "tish"is a butchers word.Easy to disifer.

Grumbles something about being on the otherside of Aus and may as be on Mars.....Cant wait for more people to start herping here.

I got 2 Oedura tryoni Southern Spotted Velvet Gecko's.
Jeff Hardy just called to confirm it...

Well good to know that the system is fair after all.

I told you so. Another happy reptile fan. Thank you Watso for letting people know.
