G'day from Cairns. New to this. Mainly here for advice and to learn.

I suspect I know what this in the picture may be but I am not sure. Anybody willing to try? Thanx.

The colour and patterning make me think it's a Pygmy Mulga Monitor (Varanus gilleni). I'm assuming the photo wasn't taken in Cairns?
 
It is Varanus gilleni – dark bands across the back and base of the tail and thin dark stripes along remainder of tail. Odds on it was shot in the wild as that looks like a bit of dead mulga it is sitting on – so yes, not Cairns.
