what is this gecko?

Looks like Nephrurus deleani or a N. laevissimus. I would probably go with N. deleani.

Is it wild caught? If so, where abouts did it come from?

N. laevissimus, used to be very hard to get but now being bred in reasonably good numbers by certain breeders.

No gonff you should not consider them as a beginner species.
