hi guys my carpet pyothon laid eggs last night -i hadnt etended on breeding- first timer, about 30 eggs but only about 10 are big most of them are half the size, just wonder what to do next shes not sitting on them?
what are the chances of them being fertile, shes in a terrarium with another carpet which is unsexed..
i want to do what i can to hatch them, any help and advise would be great.

Ok, firstly the market is currently flooded with unwanted animals so as much as it’s nice to hatch eggs and then get them feeding there is the chance you won’t be able to sell them.
So as harsh as it sounds the better option may be to not hatch them out

If she’s living with another snake I’d say a hi chance of being fertile, healthy eggs are usually white in colour and when candles will have veins through them, slugs (infertile eggs) are usually a lot smaller, not round in shape and tend to be very yellow in colour but this isn’t always the case

i am fortunate that i wouldn't sell them anyways as i have a resources and the facility to keep them, and the time to look after them, just looking for advice and help at the moment, especially that shes not sitting on them should i incubate them? if so how is this done. whats the gestational period for carpets?

The incubation period is roughly 55-65 days depending on the temp kept, 31.5 is generally a good temp, I use a converted bar fridge but you can buy commercially made incubators at a few pet stores easy enough (though they end up being quite costly)
You’ll want to make sure you have good humidity in the tub, I use vermiculite as a substrate and do a 1:1 ration of it to water

If she is not incubating the eggs and they are not close to the 31.5 temp kittycat17 referred to and close to 100% humidity they will not survive long. You can improvise by making sure the temp and humidity in the enclosure are close to requirements while you get an incubator set up. The "half size" eggs are almost certainly unfertilised so you only need to worry about the good ones. It is unusual she is not sitting on the eggs, does she have any substrate to make a nest and if the temp and humidity are wrong she may not bother. Photos of all this will help? You can make an emergency incubator out of an esky, a heat cord and thermostat, I incubate all mine over water without substrate and with just a few eggs you can use microwave steamer containers. [doublepost=1515034069,1515033970][/doublepost]I have a Styrofoam box and ill get some verimiculite. Just need a heat sorce.

I can see several slugs there, but also some fertile eggs as well.

Hard to be 100% sure from a photo if all the smaller eggs are unfertilised, if in doubt start incubating them and if they darken dispose of them then. Try to keep humidity and temp right in the enclosure until you get your incubator ready and when you move the eggs mark them and keep same side up. Problem with vermiculite is it has to be sterile and dampened with boiled water or you can get mould. The eggs should not get wet and air circulation is important.

That's interesting, Have only ever used vermiculite with turtle eggs, never sterilised it with boiling water, just added 1:1 vermiculite with ordinary tap water and put the eggs into the vermiculite half buried and put them in the incubator. 100% success rate, never had issues with mould ever.

Vermiculite straight from the bag from Bunnings.

100% success rate every time, I've always considered vermiculite the best incubation medium available.

Turtle eggs are normally buried in moist soil so I assume they are resistant to mould etc.
Python eggs are incubated by the mother above ground and not wet

Ok so i have the incubator set at 30.5 and have a few containers of waters and vermiculite 1:1 ratio in there plus the eggs suspended above the subgrade. Now whats the rule with turning? And air flow. Cant find anything perticular online.

You do not want to be turning the eggs at all. You will kill the embryo.
Hopefully you have placed the eggs in the same position you found them in or they will most likely already be lost.

Yes i have left them how i found them and marked them so all good- no turning, tick.
