My partner and I have had the worst luck with house mates. And what is worse, the last one just will not leave! he has been here about a month since I asked him to leave the last time. We have an action plan, in June/July we will be moving out again into a bigger place. We are just not inviting him to come so easy rid of him but how can I manage to aviod this problem again?
We regularly fight because he is a child and doesnt consider the neighbours and that they deserve respect or quiet at freaking mid night and he is just addicted to everything on the planet. needless to say, he doesnt work. He had a mental breakdown last night with I came out to cut his internet cord cause I had already told him to turn the volume off when it is upagainst the neighbours wall (we live in a duplex) at 11pm with their kid in the other room. Them he stormed out, past my reptiles and down the lane. My partner and I freaked out that he might have touched (according to Luke: the Expencive money makers or according to me-) My darling baby reptiles!
How do I find someone how has a Job and isn't scared of reptiles and wont steal or set up a robbery of my reptiles?! We are Christian and we were thinking Church was a good place to be looking but I dont think many churchies have reptiles and even if they do, we are also nudists LOL.

Students are usually a good choice to go for...
Try and find out their histroy, also add them on facebook for a while too and spy on them.

With the nudist part... maybe an art student...

So.. You're looking for someone that is acceptive of snakes, nude people walking around the house and Christians, but they are not a little crazy... Good luck XD.

Increase the rent. Generally people that have jobs can pay more rent.

If you can afford it, go without a housemate. My housemate drives me and my sister crazy! He's my best mate, but dear god he's doing my head in. Yesterday he accidentally smashed the kitchen window. The only thing keeping me sane is that this whole situation has an expiry date, in around a year we will be selling up, and my sister and my mate and I will all go our separate ways. After about 5 years of being together, I'll finally be able to live with my partner!
Another thing to try is a say month long probationary period, re-evaluate at the end of the month, and if you're unhappy with them, boot them out!

once they move in it's virtually impossible to kick them out. Just try and find a finer grade filter. Ask more questions... follow up references etc

Get a red belly, open his door at midnight, throw the snake in, close the door......... hold on is that too evil?

Try exchange students at uni

We invite tiny Koreans to stay
Used to be Japanese but the fish oil content was too high

Havnt had to buy goats for the big retic for 3 years now

Mmm I bet retics love a tasty Korean

I had a damn anoying young irish drunk staying with a flatmate. Drinking all night and smashing glass and bottles all over the tiles and refusing to clean anything up the next day, using the argument "what are you going to do about it, nothing"
But I found that by simply calmly talking about the issue in an even tone and with a calm tone you can get through to them.

As a side note removing the valves from their tyres every night and mixing a packet of herbal laxitives into their new age herbal tea is also helpfull.

The added bonus is with all their big talking if they weigh 60 odd kg and your 110kg what are they going to do about it, as it turns out nothing.

ok so you lost me at the christian part, but then won me back at the nudist part. now all that depends is, is your partner another girl? because i can sure as **** pretend to be christian with 2 naked girls walking around a house full of snakes. haha

Students are lazy and rarely have had experiance living out of home, I dont want to play mummy and daddy for anouther house mate. I can say that because I am a student myself, I do biology at University.

Perhaps a mature-age student?

As someone who was a student for 5 years, and lived with students for 5 years.. DO NOT get students.

I found it largely depends on the kind of student you live with - medicine, pharmacy, physio, etc type students are well disciplined, neat, tidy..
But generally speaking, avoid it.

Avoid students who do Business, Arts.. Basically those who do cruisey degrees and have a lot of time to drink / trash the place.

We had a housemate who also wouldn't leave. We kept giving him cut off dates and he just didn't leave. He pretty much lived in our lounge room, slept there, watched porn there and ate there. It was awful. He accused us of stealing his food and all. Then tried to scare my partner by getting up in his face.

In the end we broke lease and moved out meaning he had to as well because it was only myself and my partner on the lease.

I'd never live with anyone but my partner again.

I must say I've never had an experience quite that bad, Akarsha, but I've had enough of sharing. I never enjoyed it even as a younger person. Housemates equal stress.

Scribble_pants, if you can afford it I'd seriously look at the "no housemate" option.

Yeah. It was horrible. Probably didn't help that he was depressed and work wasn't looking too good. And he was arrogant as hell, one of those people who blames everything on everyone else and would continue to argue even if he was blatantly wrong.

My partner however lived with two guys and they had a perfect share house. So it does vary.

I had one good experience. With the right person/people it can work - it's just that the odds don't seem too good on finding them!
