on rats??
i own 4 pythons..and i regretably spend about $300 a bloody year
I did the maths and im sooooo bloody peeved.
If i were to purchase a couple of rats to breed, would I be:
1. saving a bit of money...or
2. spending more

help me out cause now i know why i got barely any money

Are you kidding!? You should think yourself lucky! I definately think of you as lucky! I spend roughly $200 every 5 weeks (which works out at more than $2400 a year)! For 10 snakes tho, not 4, but still... Doubt your measely $300 a YEAR on snakes is sending you broke!;)

I also try and breed my own, but its not always productive, my snakes would eat them quicker than they can breed etc, and during summer, they stop breeding coz its too hot for them to do it here.

I spend about $9 every month on feed for them (depending on weather, amount of rodents I have in there at any one time, and how long they are feeding before I cull them etc etc as different snakes need different sizes etc etc and the longer I have to have them alive to reach the right size......You get the general gist of what Im trying to say here), which would be way too expensive to do going by you thinking $300 a year for snakes is bad, theory...(Works out at about $108+ a year to feed them not including costs associated with cleaning, bedding material etc etc)

I have some big snakes that wont touch rats with a ten foot pole, so I have to breed mice as well as rats and hence have to feed them twice as much to get the same amount in them as if I fed them rats (eg feed them 5 adult mice instead of 1-2 medium rats) and it still doesnt equal out! But stuff feeding them any more than 5 mice coz it works out way way way expensive! My success isnt that great with mice as it is with rats either, so I have to buy everything still until I get the numbers up to a reasonable amount, and Ive had this going for a year or more now! LOL! I should really just give up LOL!

Oh and thats not all, I think my Lizard costs more each year, at $17+ a week on bugs! For ONE, not including my 2 geckos, which are $8.50 a week, really, you shouldnt exactly be complaining about a total of $300 a YEAR;) Most of us spend well in excess of that a month and even in a week on our lovely scaled friends! My mates costs, last I heard, were almost $3000 for a week or two max! which is 10 times your cost in a whole year!

Lizards definately cost more to keep and feed!;) So I wouldnt suggest you get any of those ;)

Errrr, and WHO are you exactly? The post police?:lol: Its not even your thread mate! Give us a break! If someone wants to reply with a lil joke to lighten the mood, then so be it, you arent one to tell them what they can and cant do! But personally I find that/their suggestion a very viable one, it would solve the problem like that! $300 a year is nothing compared to most others! Definately not exactly whinge-worthy IMHO, but who am I to say?;)

5 snakes cost $30 a week. in rats & mice (need to start breedung them again)
2 ackies, 3 gocko's & 4 beardies about $40 in crickets & roaches (just started breeding them)

I was buying my rats and mice when i only had a couple snakes, but now im breeding my own as ive got alot more mouths to eat.I also feed some of my bigger snakes chicken necks, drumsticks. They love their chicken, plus it also saves me a few rats. After i get enough rats and mice that i need,i sell the rest to cover the food, rat pellets etc.Im spending bucka all, considering all the ones i keep for myself, all the xtra pays for everything else...

$300 a year?! That's less than $6 a week - you couldn't buy a coffee and a muffin once a week for that! I would consider that really cheap for feeding a pet. Our dog costs us twice that!

I don't add up what I spend then I don't have to give my hubby any painful news. I spend what I want even if I can't afford it.

$300 a year..... i blow that on a weekend just impluse buying at my local herp shop....

Seriously but... im trying to find a decent rack system for breeding..

$300 a year is really cheap!
I just worked out I'm paying $250 a week  I now have some rabbits that I'm going to breed coz its too damn expensive to keep buying rats even from a breeder.

10-13K/year! Are you SR in disguise?

$300 a week is cheap, we spend over a thousand a year, so have started breeding our own rats, yes it is time consuming breading, cleaning cages, feeding and soforth, but it is worth it. now we just have to buy a freezer to store all the rats. our dog cost us at least $7000 2 years ago she had aspiration pneumonia, due to being desexed she was only 6 months at the time, so she spent at least 3 months touch and go at the specialists center as a ordinary vet could not save her. she is a great little dog and we do not regret it. all animals and reptiles cost at some stage so for those of you who consider keeping any animal or reptile please consider the costs first before your wants as it may cost the animals health in the end, they all deserve the best care possible.

if you decide to bread rats look at what you require, the cost involved and the time, if you can manage then it is worth it.

cheers jules

LOL not that many! However with quite a few snakes (some that eat more than 1rat) + expensive rats it all adds up (but that is also factoring in petrol to go and get them which is around $30). I admit it is less in winter when some aren't eating though.
Although if I bought rats from the local pet shop (@ $30 a rat ) it would cost nearly 1k a week!

I'll crack out easy $50 a week on rats and mice...

hey, you can get tubs to breed rats in at cheap as chips for about 10 bucks. you could buy two or 3 of these and get some rats, it would only take about 2 or 3 weeks for you to get a litter of rats, longer for them to grow. all depends on how much u want to spend.
u could invest that 300 dollars and buy a breeding kit for rats, pretty sure ive seen some advertised on here before. They basically survive on watever u give them aswell, so just scaps you have from food u eat

Tetras, you have to feed them properly...not just scraps.

$300 a year. buy your rats. its not worth the hassel breeding, cleaning, and killing them if you only spend $300. just find yourself agood local breeder and buy from them, you may save a couple of dollars

I usually spend $250-300 a week on rodents and still come away with not having enough. Feeding 30+ snakes is one thing, but then to be feeding 9 Lace Monitors who beg for food every bloody day......

Thank god for quails and day old chicks. They've really saved me and lifted the weight off my shoulders.

yeh im a bit of a hypocondriac when it comes to money.
And to the person who suggested i sell my snakes, get stuffed.
probably a few ways to say what i said but thats the nicest.

i would like to breed rats, im pretty handy when it comes to building things (but lazy)

cheers
