My daughter called out that there was a dead snake in the yard - obviously killed by my cattle dog. She said it was a black snake.

As soon as I saw it I said No it's an eastern brown - but then thought no it's a black.

It has the black body of the red-bellied black snake, the orange blotches of the eastern brown - but the head is brown. A similar looking snake would be the Swamp or Marsh Snake with the two cream stripes on the head - but this one has no cream stripes.

Any ideas???

The colour variation in Browns is great.
My mates found a bright red one a few months ago.
Was intense.

Browns come in alot of variations in their colour..from light brown-reddy colour to dark brown-black and also depends on what season it is.Obviously in Summer they are generally light however in Winter they get dark...Can confuse alot of people thou..

Hi - red dots on ventral scales are a give away - it's a brown snake.
