So i called my boss last night to tell her i was too sick to even consider going into work today. I'm a carer so i have to be on top of my game and i was in no shape to be looking after anyone. Copped an earful down the phone about how "inappropriate and unacceptable" that was... I'm a casual, with no contract. I have been telling my boss that she needed to get a second backup carer lined up since i started last year just in case i get sick. Of course she never bothered to do that and low and behold, i get sick and she doesn't have anyone else to turn to so has to do it herself. I work crazy hours for this woman and stay back many hours overtime to help her out all the time, i go above and beyond what would be reasonable to expect in this role and yet i get treated like this. Decided that i don't actually need this job, well, i decided that this job isn't worth being totally unappreciated.

So now i'm feeling pretty low. Because the reality of the situation is that everyone gets treated like dirt by their employer at some point in time and we still have to put up with it. Not to mention the fact that everyone needs to earn a living and i'm ready to walk away from this job when the job market is so terrible. I have a backup at another place where the boss and people are like family, its a joy to work there, but they can't offer me enough hours to survive on.

Anyway, i guess i'm having a whinge. I almost wish i could bear the extreme boredom of some generic retail job just to earn a living. Got to swallow a whole lot of pride before i go back to that though.

Who else is having a bugger of a tough old time at work? Everyone? Yeah, thought so.

Some of my best friends do what you do for a job. You guys/girls are awesome, more power to you! I could never do it.
I hope you are ok and a better job comes your way soon.

When one door closes another opens. You will be fine. Yeah everyone has issues with their bosses from time to time but that doesn't mean you have to put up with being treated like that. It is asking too much to expect a boss to appreciate your work. But you can expect to hear about it when something goes wrong.

Chin up. Something else will come along. Never know, that boss might let you have your job back. But right now, stop panicking. Centrelink offers top up payment plans to help you out. Enjoy a couple days of freedom and then start working out what you're going to do next.

I am a postie contractor. I love my job. I spend a couple hours in the morning in the post office with the rest of the crew, sorting our mail, then I spend 2-3 hours on the road, in a 4WD, on my own, delivering the mail. I've hunted blue tongues off the roads, I've picked up injured birds, I pig out and talk to myself. Its great. I love it.

I work in the mining industry. People are losing their jobs like crazy at the moment. As posted above when one door closes another will open. I think the key to long term employment is having a skilled trade or a qualification that enables you to contribute to society. There is always a demand... There will always be a demand for carer's especially with all the baby boomers getting old ;)

I lost my job a few months ago.... Well I quit any way I went 2 months without a job (luckily I have some savings. After two months of not getting the jobs I really wanted I got a call, didn't even apply for the job just word of mouth. Now I have a great job and am so happy I left my old one.

Hang in there, I know it sucks but I'm sure it will work out for the best.

Good luck and I hope your ok.

I got assaulted at work today by the next door neighbour's big maori teenage daughter while some druggo woman with missing teeth threatened to kill me and the girl I was caring for. A few weeks ago a boy I was working with tried to stab me to death with a fork and had to be taken away by police in hand cuffs. I have never had to call the police so many times before becoming a youth worker LOL. Every shift has a twist!!!! Surprisingly I don't mind the work. At least it isn't boring!!

Because the reality of the situation is that everyone gets treated like dirt by their employer at some point in time and we still have to put up with it.

No one should put up with being treated like dirt. It takes a toll on your mental health and makes you sick through stress. No decent human being treats people like that and being an employer doesn't suddenly give you licence to behave uncivilly to the people who work for you.

For what it's worth, I think you did the right thing. Good luck with finding another job, which will hopefully be one where you are treated with respect.

Sounds like my ideal job, Kathy!

That sounds like it's not my ideal job. But kudos to you; it's important work, just as Euphorion's profession is.

I should clarify, i'm not a human carer. I'm a Vet Nurse, and i am a private carer for very sick little dogs with very wealthy owners who choose to extend their animals' lives through intensive care such as what i provide. So, i'm a carer, but nothing fancy.

Hopefully there is something great around the corner, thanks for your kind messages of support!

Whilst I feel for you losing your job.
I find this post quite offensive. I am a qualified veterinary nurse and work very hard to get people to understand I am a professional, not someone who wants to play with kittens and puppies. I studied hard and still do continuing education at any spare minute I may have. (to be honest to get cert IV in vet nursing is a bit of a joke) I could of studied to become a vet, I choose to become a vet nurse for my own reasons, not because I was too dumb. My skills I have honed over the years and am very proud of.
I am a "real" vet nurse not an 18yr old kid who serves you at your general practice. My skills and knowledge are far superior to a human nurse, no not tooting my own horn just stating facts. Please find a human nurse who can do what a true vet nurse can/does do. Though of course this is not meant to be derogatory towards any human nurses. Human nurses seem to specialize in one area, whereas I guess we have to specialize in every area, oh and get paid about half what a human nurse does......

In Brisbane if you are an experienced veterinary nurse you can get a job wherever you want as there are very few real veterinary nurses, definitely no shortage of jobs.
Sorry to go off topic, and if I misinterpreted your post I apologize, but some of us are professionals and work very hard to get recognised as such, without people like yourself bringing down the profession "shooshoo"/"euphorion".
Anyway good luck in the job game.

Are you proud of that attack? Cause saying no affence and likewise dose not make it less offencive

Maybe it's just me phantomreptiles, but I don't think euphorion was at any point undermining your professions....

Well it never came across to me that way

Yeah, work is crap. I'm in Finland spending time with my fiancé that for reasons I won't mention (long story) I cannot see often. And I mean like at all.
So while I'm here I find out that my company is going to crap because those morons cannot handle a business properly and my back-stabbing boss has given my job away.

Wow. What a completely pointless, off topic, long winded piece of crap. You clearly have an axe to grind, why don't you keep your misery to yourself and spare us having to read your garbage?
Kind regards,
Aaron.

Chin up babe, you'll find something else!

my mums a nurse unit manager , been in the game since she left school , she just laughed at that , your not superior to them far from it
you deal with animals they specialise in humans its a different ball game so get off your high horse , seriously that has to be one of the most ridiculous statements i have ever read on here ,

and ill put it to you , please show me that a vet nurse can do what hospital nurses do on a daily basis , after car crashes , heart attack victims , you really didnt think about what you where saying , what about someone that had been stabbed in the throat in a main artery and was bleeding profusely , would you really really know what to do in theatre in any of those cases , now forget about that , lets talk about cancer patients and the like , do you even have a clue what goes on there , seeing as your skill are far superior than that of any human nurse , your words not mine

^^Agreed. What a ridiculous thing to say Phantomreptiles. And then you go on to insult someone else's profession and toot your own horn haha. *rolls eyes*.

Euphorion you will get another job where you are appreciated, I am sure of it. Most people do go through problems with their employer, as you said. However, your situation is a whole new ballgame. Your current employer is underpaying you, over working you, and denying you your basic right to be legitimately too sick to work ONE DAY in a year of never missing a shift. How ridiculous is it for her to refuse to hire a second person and putting all that pressure on you as he sole person able to care for the animal.

Well said Thomassss. It's a totally different ball game. The main difference is managing different species in an emergency, especially in keeping them calm and preventing more damage to themselves or anyone else. A stab wound to the neck in a human patient is one thing, and completely different to say a crushing and lacerating injury inflicted during a dog fight, how does one deal with that when the victim is a geriatric little maltese? That's why there are different professions, because we all need a totally different skill set. I have supreme respect for human nurses, they take some serious abuse from their patients, work horrible hours for unrealistic pay and at the end of the day rarely get a thank you or any recognition for their work. Respect to your mum and all nurses :)

I don't find your post offensive, it speaks for itself.

I am a qualified veterinary nurse and i know some nurses that while they are not qualified their knowledge is far superior to some qualified nurses. Having a qualification in this field is not a true and accurate reflection of a nurse's ability to do their job.

Not that i owe you an explanation or any particular details; i do still work at a clinic. It is a fantastic, rewarding, stressful, demanding and HECTIC job. And i love it. My 'carers' role was not in a clinic, but as a private nurse. Essentially a dog nanny, and my experience as a nurse was what made me so valuable to my boss. To be able to explain what was happening to her beloved pet, translate the vet-talk into something she could understand, desscribe the particulars of some of the medications she was taking and to be able to deal with emergency situations calmly and competently. That's why is was 'nothing fancy'. I wasn't dealing with surgical situations, cancer patients, or anything of the like. Just doing my best to maintain the quality of life of a little dog for a woman who loved her very much.

I simply wanted to clarify to the people assuming i was a human carer that i was not, they are entitled to the truth in that as it certianly changes their understanding of my role and the situation.

I have never had to justify my vocation or qualifications as a 'real job' to anyone. I guess i don't have any problems explaining to people that while sometimes i get to cuddle puppies, talk about simple things like dental hygiene and grooming i still have to be able to deal with hit-by-cars, dog attacks, tick paralysis, poisoning, heatstroke, etc. at the drop of a hat. The clients at my clinic are like family, they know how hard we work and we know how much they appreciate us. They don't always expect us to be on-hand to chat if we're busy, or have time to do 'fancy' dog clips in summer but they know we will do our job which is to look after them, and their pets, as if they were our own family.

I'm sure every single unqualified vet nurse in the country, and like me, most of the qualified ones, would be ready to rip shreds off you for your post though.

I can understand where phantomreptiles is coming from though. Human nurses get the "just a nurse" attitude bad enough, let alone vet nurses, who a lot of the time get it ten times worse. And to read what does (to a certain extent, whether it was intended or not) come across as that same attitude coming from someone who actually works in the field, would be enough to get your back up.

Alright, i lied. I find some of the things you said highly offensive. To say that your skill set is far superior to a human nurse is a crock of pig poo. Your spelling and grammar give me the impression that, in fact, you didn't have the brains to be a Vet. Implying that only the people that are "too dumb" to get into Vet at Uni become nurses and that Cert IV is a "joke" is such a mean-spirited and condecending attitude. I could have (not "could of") done Vet straight off the bat, but chose not to based on my own personal circumstances which i feel no need to justify to you.

I don't know, i haven't taken any personal offence from what you said. I guess i've just taken offence on behalf of the people you insulted like unqualified nurses and human nurses.

What i said was open to misinterpretation. The role i have decided to give up was a 'dog nanny' role, not a proper Vet Nursing role. I do think it's a shame that Phantomreptiles feels that her profession is not respected enough. I guess i'm lucky to have a great workplace, co-workers, friends/family and clients such that i never feel that way.

Don't worry about it Euphrion It was clearly posted as a rant thread and how someone could be offended by what you said is beyond me.
