Ive just gotten my first snake. A 9 month old black headed python. It’s been handled a lot by the store I got him from. I even held it myself. I’ve had it home for 4 days now but when I try to pick him up with the hook he runs away. I was told 4 days was enough time to let him settle in. How much time should I give him before attempting to pick him up and am I doing more damage than good trying to pick him up if he’s running away?

General rule is a week unless they settle in fast, try picking him up without the hook in a couple days

Cheers, I’ll give him a few more days. He was always picked up with a hook so that’s what I thought he would be most comfortable with.

Got my little guy Saturday and he is very defensive. This afternoon i noticed he has finally gone into his hide to calm down after a plane ride.
Will give him a few more days at least before i even try and touch him.

Sometimes new snakes just take a while to settle in.
